I bit my tongue at what I perceived as a jab about Alex and ‘how happy’ she was. I pushed that down, with some degree of effort as I tried to focus on the much happier news. I held her back and looked down at her…there was nothing to see yet, of course, but still I looked and I smiled. I think it was real…it felt real. “Jami…I am happy for you…and know what this means to you. I really do!”
I hugged her again, more carefully this time, kissing her cheek before pulling away. “I’m sorry I didn’t give you a real chance to explain…I should have. For that, I’m sorry…that and a lot of other things. If you’re happy now…that is all that matters.” My mood grew more serious, “But for the sake of yourself and that little one…let those girls live their lives. Let them make mistakes if they are going to. Let Parker figure out that he needs to be a man and stand on his on two feet! You can’t be everyone’s guiding light and protector…they have to figure it out on their own.”
I swallowed, not wanting to talk about Alex, but my hand was forced. “If Alex is in a good place with someone…then that goes to show you that you can finally focus on yourself.” It bothered me to use her as an example, but my reasons were selfish. I held her face and kissed her cheek…suppressing the urge to violate her mouth. I was her friend now…and those old instincts would have to be done away with. I was pleased with my progress and my ability to be okay with things as they were. I checked my watch, pretending I had somewhere to be, then looked at her again. “It really was nice to see you again Jami…” I stopped short of calling her by my old nickname for her…she wasn’t mines anymore. Instead, I gave her shoulder a squeeze, “…take good care of yourself.”
