THE RED QUEEN
Port of Los Angeles
December 11, 2017
Sarah's eyes burst open, the red irises blazing like a sparked blaze. They move back and forth, taking in her surroundings, though a look of confusion comes to her pale face.
"Beloved?"
I am up like a shot as I hear her voice. At first, I thought it was a dream. All of my dreams were about Sarah being with me the way we were before, then they all ended the same...with her mute and distant. This was not that...she was here. I threw my arms around her, kissing her face relentlessly as I held on for dear life. "BABY! Don't leave me...okay?"
Sarah smiles under the kisses and tries to push me away…and fails. I would not be denied. "Where...where are we? I feel...weird."
I finally stop long enough to acknowledge her question. "On board the Queen...I didn't want to fly back to Maine...not with you...being...away. You've been gone since Friday night." I wiped my face as tears threatened, but I forced them back.
Sarah blinked several times. "...gone?" She looks left and right, face even more confused than before. "What day is it?"
"It's Monday Baby, but don't you worry about that. I didn't leave you...I never will. I swear." I didn't know how much time I'd have with her, but I didn't intend to waste it talking about things that didn't matter. "Do you want me to help you up?"
Sarah blinked again, her eyes moving rapidly. I could tell that she was processing information. "Three days?" She shakes her head, her face falling further. "And here I thought I was getting better." She looked in my eyes and gave a small nod. "Please...a little help."
I scramble to help her up, ignoring the fight between JMC and my mother. I had no idea why she was suddenly popping back into my life spoiling for a fight, but I had no time for her or my mother. I help her sit up and get to her chair. "Are you hungry or thirsty? I can get you something."
"Ice water, she says as she settles into her chair. Her hand rises to rub her throat and she grimaces. "My throat is on fire thanks to that damned feeding tube. I bet Roxanne has been having a blast at my expense."
She catches my arm before I can move and gave me a look that was both a smile and frown. "I officially retract my petition to step onto the batter's box. With our luck, I would leave you again in the middle of my swing!"
I giggle as I think back to an earlier conversation we had last week. Sarah has used baseball as an analogy for our lack of intimacy...likening herself to a batter who was no longer able to hit homeruns, but still wanted to play the game. I pat her hand. "Nature will take its course Baby. Don't you worry about a thing." I turned and hurried off to get the water, moving as fast as I could.
"Do not let that stop you from going for singles and doubles!"
Sarah giggles herself after calling after her wife, then goes back to taking stock of where she was. The interior of the Red Queen matched her, a mixture of reds and blacks, and she breathed slowly and deeply as she looked around. Her head swam and her vision was a little blurred, like she had woken from a mid-day nap.

I returned with an insulated cup with a long straw for her to sip from. I knelt next to her, half expecting her to again be staring off in the distance...thankfully, she wasn’t. “Here Baby!” I held it for her, my eyes scanning for any sign of discomfort.
Sarah took the cup with a small smile. She grimaced as she took a sip from the straw, but otherwise seemed fine. "How are you? What have you been up to while I was...away?"
I stare at her, my reply completely serious. “...this...”
Sarah's face fell a little and her eyes teared up. "Mackenzie...we have staff..."
"We have staff, but you belong to me. I will take care of you, I don't need any staff to do it." I reach over and wipe the tears from her eyes.
Sarah shivered. "Come here, you." Sarah struggled to pull me up and kissed me as violently as she could. She held our foreheads pressed together, a favorite pose for the two of us. "I am yours forever."
