In just one week’s time, the newly arrogant and self-involved Nova Sinclair will be going up against the future Mrs. Crystal Hilton, Seleana Zdunich. In her mind, Nova already had the match won. She was that confident...that sure of her experience and ability in the ring, that Seleana just didn’t stand a chance in her eyes. She is, you could say, not taking Seleana as seriously as she should be, and only time will tell whether or not how that would play out in the ring.
It was also clear that Nova was being a little bit nicer to Seleana than she would be against anyone else, but that didn’t change her feelings about what the outcome of their match would be. Especially after watching Seleana’s promo just now.
Nova is sitting in the training room of the home she has been sharing with Declan Black for the last several months. She’s leaning back in her chair, dressed in her training gear, with her right leg crossed over her left and her arms folded across her chest with a smug look on her face. She stares at Seleana’s face on the screen of her laptop and just laughs with a quick roll of her eyes.
“Am I ready? She’s really asking if I’m ready? Oh, Seleana, you’re such a sweetie, but you have quite a bit to learn about me, it seems.”
She talks to herself out loud before she leans forward and grabs her cell phone from next to her laptop. She taps the screen a few times and then puts the phone to her ear, waiting for the person she is calling to answer. Two rings later, they do just that.
“Willow, dear, have I called you at a bad time?”
Though she asked that question, she really didn’t care. She and Declan employed Willow, so when either of them called, she was expected to drop whatever she was doing if they needed her. And right now, Nova needed her.
“Oh, terrific. Look, I just finished watching Seleana’s promo against me, and--”
Nova rolled her eyes as Willow quickly, and rudely, interrupted her. She clears her throat.”
“We really need to work on that a bit, Willow. I’m glad you watched it as well, but right now, I need for you to head over here with your camera so we can get a proper answer to Seleana recorded. How does that sound?”
Willow’s squealing can be heard coming from the phone as Nova pulls it a few inches away until she stops. Nova lets out a sigh as she brings her phone back to her ear.
“Don’t you worry about that, Willow. I will let Shaun or Dom know that you’ll be here shortly. And Reagan will show you to the training room.”
Willow speaks again and Nova grins.
“The only way Reagan would harm you is if you were to threaten me in any way. And, given the amount of your current salary, I doubt you would even consider doing that, am I right? Good. See you soon, sweetie.”
Nova doesn’t give Willow the chance to speak further before she taps the screen and ends the call. She quickly dials another number and the other person answers almost immediately.
“Hello Shaun. I’m just letting you know that Willow will be here shortly. I’ve asked her to record an interview. When she gets here, have Reagan show her to the training room.”
Nova then ends that call after Shaun obliges her order and she returns her phone to its place next to her laptop. She closes her laptop and then stands up from her chair, heading over to the person wrestling ring Declan had built for their training sessions. Once there, she jumps up onto the edge of the ring, crossing her legs again as she waits for Willow.
About fifteen minutes later, Reagan steps through the doorway with Willow following right behind. Willow looks around the luxurious training room, and she’s left in awe at all of the high tech equipment that Declan spared absolutely no expense for. Nova nods once to Reagan, and the seemingly dangerous yet mute bodyguard steps right back outside the door and disappears.
“Having you live close really has its perks. Like what you see?”
“Like it? This has to be the greatest training room I’ve ever seen! Well, not that I’ve seen many, but I can’t imagine any greater than this.”
Nova chuckles and Willow slowly makes her way towards her, all while still looking at the various equipment.
“Of course it’s the greatest. Declan would have nothing but the best. Did you bring your camera?”
Willow quickly snaps out of her momentary trance and reaches into her bag, pulling out a small camera and showing it to Nova.
“Of course. Are you sure you really want to do this? I mean, Seleana’s cousin is married to Mr. Black’s trainer, right?”
“All I’m doing is responding to her, Willow. The match has already been made, and regardless of how Seleana is connected to Declan, and therefore me, I’m not backing down. But I’m also not going to make myself appear weak for that reason either.”
Willow quickly finds a place and starts setting up her camera, making sure the angles are just right.
“Oh, of course not. I just meant...nevermind. It’s your decision. Is that where you want to stay for this?”
Willow points to Nova and where she is seated on the edge of the ring. Nova nods with half a smile on her face.
“If I wanted to be seated anywhere else, I would have moved. This will be just fine, Willow.”
“Alright then. I think we’re just about ready. You look amazing, by the way. Even in your training gear.”
Nova smiles and shrugs.
“Obviously. Let’s get a move on it. Declan will be down in a little while to start preparing me for Seleana.”
Willow simply nods and gives Nova a thumbs up. A moment later she presses a button on the camera and looks towards Nova.
“Hello everyone, Willow here, and I am, of course, being joined by the woman who should be our Breakout Champion, Nova Sinclair. In just one week she goes up against Seleana Zdunich, the woman with the unfortunate future of being Crystal Hilton’s wife. And after facing Seleana, Nova will soon be moving on to challenge and win for the Breakout Championship. So, Nova, how are you feeling?”
Nova looks into the camera, grins and places her hands against the ring apron, leaning on to it arrogantly.
“Such a silly question. Look around you, Willow. And everyone watching needs to take a good look around. I’m living a life of luxury with everything I want. The best of everything. My life is perfect. My life is the best. Of course I’m feeling fantastic.”
“I can see why, Miss Sinclair. You asked me here for a reason, which I’m going to waste no time in addressing. Earlier I watched what Seleana Zdunich had to say to you, and I know you watched as well just a little while ago. Seleana ended her promo with one simple question. It was, perhaps, the stupidest question one could ask you. That one question is is proof positive that she doesn’t stand a chance against you. Are you ready?”
Nova laughs and shakes her head. She looks down to the floor for a moment, then sits up straight and leans back against the ring ropes behind her, looking back into the camera.
“Am I ready? Am I, Nova Rain Sinclair, ready? Oh, Seleana. I was born ready, sweetie. I’ve been involved in wrestling in some shape or form, for the last five years. And for the last seven months or so, I’ve been training with Declan. Really becoming the best that I can be. How long have you been wrestling, Seleana? Not very long, right?”
Nova laughs again, once again leaning forward.
“I’m more than ready, Seleana. I’m one hundred perfect certain that once all is said and done, my hand will be raised in victory and you’ll be walking away, back to Crystal Hilton, disappointed. Then again, even when you walk away with a win, walking back to Crystal is a disappointment all on its own. But, that is a topic for another day.”
“Is it, though? Crystal Hilton is her manager. I am sure they have trained together a time or two. Not to mention, Seleana’s cousin is married to Robbie Priest, Declan’s trainer and mentor. Surely you should address that here and now, Miss Sinclair.”
Nova closes her eyes for a few moments and takes in a deep breath. She opens them a few moments later, first looking at Willow, then back into the camera.
“As if any of that truly matters? I could beat Crystal Hilton any day of the week, even with her being more experienced than I am. Because while Crystal may be more experience, she’s definitely not smarter than I am. And as for Seleana’s cousin being married to Robbie? Well…”
Nova shrugs, not caring.
“That hardly matters to me. Her cousin maybe married to him, but does that mean she has the same skills that he does? That Declan does, and therefore that I do? No, I don’t think so. From my understanding, it was Crystal that managed to get Seleana to become a wrestler in the first place. So, if anything, Seleana will have more of Crystal’s ring abilities than anything. And, that, is not something I’m at all concerned about. Seleana, sweetie, take my advice here. If you want to be the best you can be in that ring, perhaps you should train with Robbie sometime. Not the self-proclaimed Silver Screen Queen, or whatever it is that your fiancee is calling herself these days.”
Nova grins, and from off camera, Willow can be heard chuckling herself. She clears her throat a few moments later.
“Do you find this match at all awkward like Seleana does? It does make it difficult given how Declan feels about her and her family.”
Nova shakes her head.
“Not at all, Willow. I could be going into the ring against Declan himself and it wouldn’t matter. I’m not going to show any weakness or hold back in the slightest just because Declan likes her. I already said I am not going to go to great lengths to hurt her in any way. And Reagan won’t touch her, either, regardless of what people think. I won’t hurt her, but I’ll do whatever is necessary to beat her, because losing isn’t an option.”
“Whatever is necessary? What does that mean?”
Nova bites at her bottom lip innocently, realizing she might have said to much. She ends up shrugging her shoulders.
“Take from it what you wish, Willow. There are other ways to ensure a victory that doesn’t involved harming her illegally. Whatever is necessary…”
Willow thinks for a moment when it dawns on her.
“Perhaps I should edit that last bit out later.”
“Good idea, Willow.”
Just then someone clearing their throat startles Willow. Nova looks past her and sees Declan standing in the doorway, a stern look on his face. Willow quickly stops recording and turns away, while Declan looks directly at Nova.
“If she comes back saying you’re anything less than honorable, we’re going to have an issue.”
Nova feigns innocence and almost waves it off.
“Dec, I’ve already said I’m not going to hurt her. Besides, people already think I can’t win cleanly. I’ll go to whatever lengths I have to go to to beat her though. Losing isn’t--”
“I don’t give a shit what anybody on that roster says about you. But Seleana is one of those that I made a bastardisation of a family out of.”
Willow starts gathering up her camera and steps aside as Declan walks up to Nova, who remains absolutely quiet.
“People look at me and they think I’m so fucking lucky. I would trade anything to have had parents that loved me, family that cared. I have one cousin who isn’t garbage. That’s it.”
Nova glances over to Willow.
“Maybe I was wrong, Willow. Maybe this match is going to be a bit awkward.
Nova looks back to Declan.
“I need to look in Alexi Preist’s eyes when I someday come back there...and if there’s anything but love there, I’m not going to make thirty.”
Now feeling guilty, Nova lets out a sigh as she looks into Declan’s eyes.
“Alright, alright. I won’t do anything dishonorable. But if- and that is a big if- I lose to this girl, I’ll never heard the end of it, Declan. She’s the rookie here. Not me, like some people seem to think.”
“That’s why we’re going to work to make sure you don’t lose. That’s why your submission training is going to be more intense than ever this week. That’s why you’re going to train...almost like you’re me.”
Nova smiles.
“How is that any different than the training sessions we already go through?”
“I have Evolutionary War II coming up, you can share my regimen, but adapt it. I’m not having you pass out.”
Nova jumps down from the edge of the ring, standing next to Declan. The two of them seem to have forgotten that Willow was there. That is, until Willow finally speaks up.
“Will that be all then, Miss Sinclair? Anything else you want to add to it later?”
Nova looks over at Willow, shaking her head.
“That will be all, Willow. It seems as though the rest of my week is going to be quite busy.”
Willow offers Nova and Declan a friendly smile as she throws her bag over her shoulder and nods.
“Alright then. I’ll get to editing this as soon as I get home, and I’ll send you the finished video once I’m done. You two have a good week!”
Nova simply waves at Willow and the young interviewer turns around and makes her leave. Nova joins Declan in the ring soon after, beginning what will be the first of many training sessions this week.
A couple of days later, following yet another training session between her and Declan, Nova was making her way to kitchen to grab another bottle of water from the refrigerator. Her cheeks were flushed and her skin glistening with perspiration, but she wasn’t any worse for wear as she was enjoying a break from the rigorous workouts Declan was putting her through. He was continuing his own workout downstairs, training much more intensely for his upcoming match at Hybrid’s Evolutionary War II. Nova had wanted to try and match his own regimine but, no offense to Nova, there was no way she would be able to keep up with him, even if she tried.
So she took the break. Just as she opened her bottle of water, she heard a commotion coming from outside. She heard Shaun and Dom barking orders at Reagan, and a woman shouting. But, not just any woman. She new that voice anywhere.
It was her mother.
Nova took a quick drink of her water and then placed it down on the counter before rushing towards the door. When she opened the door, she saw Reagan holding her mother back and dragging her away, kicking and screaming. Quite literally.
“Get your hands off of me! I’m here to see Nova, damn it!”
“Miss Sinclair did not inform us of anyone coming to see her, today. You’ll have to come back another time.”
“What the hell is going on out here?!”
All four of them stop once they hear Nova shouting, and see her walking out of the luxurious house and towards them. Reagan keeps a hard grasp on Nova’s mother.
“Nova! Tell this vile woman to let go of me!”
“Reagan, it’s fine. You can let her go.”
Reagan immediately does as she is told, but she stays right where she is, glaring at Liza furiously. Liza dusts herself off, and rubs her arm, slightly pained from Reagan’s strong grip.
“I apologize, Miss Sinclair. I wasn’t aware that anyone else would be here.”
Shaun apologizes and Nova waves it off.
“It’s ok, Shaun. I wasn’t aware, either. Could you three give us a little space? I need to talk to my mother in private for a moment.”
Shaun and Dom nod once before they walk a distance away, along with Reagan. Nova walks up to her mother, folding her arms angrily.
“What the hell are you doing here? You know you can’t just show up like this.”
“I’m your mother. I can do anything I see fit when it comes to you. That security team of yours truly is awful, Nova. And hardly necessary.”
Nova rolls her eyes and glances towards Shaun, Dom and Reagan. Shaun and Dom are talking quietly amongst themselves, while Reagan is keeping a close watch on the situation between Nova and her mother. Nova turns her attention back to Liza.
“Look, I don’t have time for any of this. You should have called and I would have been happy to set something up, but this is a bad week.”
“It’s always a bad week for you lately, Nova! I don’t understand why. I don’t understand this sudden change in you. I had hoped coming to see you would be different, but I guess I was wrong.”
Nova laughs.
“I’d apologize for finally being able to enjoy my life and everything I have, but I’m not sorry at all. I’m an adult, mother. I have a life. I have a career. I’m not always going to drop everything to fly to Boston to see you. You have your own life with Jocelyn, too. You don’t need me around all the time.”
The contempt for Jocelyn is clear in Nova’s voice as soon as she says her name. Liza shakes her head and runs her hand through her hair, trying to figure Nova out.
“You weren’t raised like this, Nova. You weren’t raised to treat people the way you’ve been treating them. The way you’ve been treating me and Jocelyn!”
“I’m calling it the way I see it, mother. You might not see it, but you will some day soon. And I was raised like this. Exactly like this. You and Daddy made sure I had everything I ever wanted. I guess it just took me a little longer than most to realize how great it all really was.”
Liza shakes her head, fighting back tears.
“Your attitude is disgusting, Nova. Truly it is. Is this how you want people to see you? Is this how you want all of your fans to see you?! If you have any left, that is?”
“I don’t care how people see me, mother! I don’t care if I have any fans, because I don’t need any fans. I’ll still accomplish everything I’m going to accomplish on my own. I’ll get everything I want all on my own, because I deserve it all. Besides, if people hate me, it’s only because they want what I have, and they know they’ll never get any of it. I mean, I could teach them a few things, I suppose, but they still wouldn’t be as great as me or my life with Declan, Amy and Kendra.”
Liza’s jaw drops and she stares at Nova, shocked.
“You...don’t need the fans? You don’t need people to like you?! Nova, they’re the ones who voted you as a Future Champion! They has to mean something, doesn’t it?”
“Oh, it does. It means that they were smart for once and did the right thing. No one else in LAW is worth being called Future Champion. Look, I’d really love to stay here and argue with you…”
She stops and laughs, shaking her head.
“Actually, no I wouldn’t. Which is why I’m going to put an end to it right here and now. Do yourself a favor, mother. Go home and stay there. Enjoy your life with Jocelyn while you have it, and let me enjoy my life with Declan.”
“Nova, please. Stop all of this!”
“No! You stop all of this, mother! You made your decision to be with Jocelyn! You betrayed everything you ever had with Daddy all to get involved with a gold digging whore like Jocelyn. I promise you, she’s going to betray you, and when she does, you’ll come running to me to tell me I was right. Until then, we’re done here. I’m not going to have you continue trying to paint me out as such a horrible person, when you’re sleeping with the worst of the worst. I have a match to prepare for. Shaun?! Dom?! Please show my mother back to her vehicle, please!”
Liza shakes her head as Nova turns and starts walking away. Just as Shaun and Dom walk up to her, she has one last thing to say to Nova.
“I hope that woman beats you on Sunday. Maybe then you’ll realize how truly awful you’ve been.”
Shaun goes to grab her arm, but she yanks it away. Nova turns around and glares at her mother.
“Screw you, mother. Losing isn’t an option.”
Nova then turns around and disappears back into the house while Liza storms off back to her car. Shaun, Dom and Reagan all stay where they are, making sure she drives away, which she does moments later. Just inside the door, Nova watches her mother speed off, and the look in her eye grows more determined than before, and she turns and heads off back to the training room to continue where she left off.
This is it. We’re down to the wire, aren’t we, Seleana? In just twenty-four hours we step into that ring, go toe-to-toe and square off in our first match against one another, and I’m sure it won’t be the last. However, if I have anything to say about it, it will be the last for a very long time, because once I beat you, I’m moving one step closer to what I’m really after. What I’ve been after for a very long time.
I know how awkward this is for you, Seleana. You’ve made it a point to say it more often than you probably should. This shouldn’t be awkward, Seleana. This shouldn’t be anything more than business, because that is exactly what it is. Business. You’re doing yourself a huge disservice by exposing how nervous you are going into this match, and I’m going to take advantage of that as much as I can.
I get that you like me, Seleana. I mean, what’s not to like, right? I know plenty of people out there might find an argument against that, but let’s face it, they’re clueless. But, just because you like me, doesn’t mean that will help you. Just because you see past what everyone else sees, doesn’t mean I will take it easy on you, because as I’ve said before, I don’t intend to.
But, you need to realize something, Seleana. The path you said that I “had to stay on” so the world was mine? Honey, I never left that path. I’ve been on that path since the day I was born, and I’m staying on the path for the rest of my life.
So I left LAW for a few months? So people out there want to start rumors on what my reasons for leaving were? To be quite honest, it’s really none of their business. Yes, I had a slight injury, but it’s nothing I couldn’t have risked wrestling with regardless. There was nothing mental, nothing confidence related, and to suggest that it was...well, that’s on those who want to believe that it was. All that matters right now, is that I’m back, and I am more determined than ever to get everything I deserve, and come tomorrow night, Seleana? You’re going to find out first hand just how determined I am.
You’re just like I was when I first signed with LAW, Seleana. You’re everything I used to be. Sweet. Naive. Pandering to what people want you to be. I get Declan likes you, and I’m not about to change that, but I hope for your sake that sooner or later you see everything that life has to offer you, and it’s oh so much more than the likes of Crystal Hilton can give you.
I’m sticking to my word, this week. I’m going to do everything in my power to beat you, but I won’t step out of bounds. I won’t do anything dishonorable, but I will most definitely take you to your absolute limit, Seleana. And that is something you can’t say you will do to me, no matter how hard you try.
Are YOU ready, Seleana?
