Hey guys! Seeing the chat post from Ana about the use of her character in segments and my own apparent recent ‘party foul’ has prompted me to make a post on the subject. I am NOT lobbying for change or trying to start a heated debate (I have spit enough fire on the subject to those who wanted to know more about what happened). The long and the short of it is that perpetrated an attack on another handler’s character during a show because I felt that is what my character would do, given the angles that had come before and our interaction and collaboration in the past. Apparently I was SUPER wrong about this because despite what I thought was a budding angle coming out of that attack, given the social media interaction between myself, that handler, and others who took interest in the direction, I was informed in no uncertain terms that I had crossed the line by not asking first. While (as I understand) neither of us really had any angles going at the time, my use of that other handler’s character in my attack was annoying to them. While I did not speak for them, just had my character go after theirs in the ring, I understood that they felt that way for their own reasons.
The rules of LAW clearly state that we should not be using one another’s characters without vetting it with them, and while I still don’t think that I took any liberties with the other handler’s character, within the apparent framework of this rule, one could deem that I was in violation. To make a long story short, I apologized to the handler decided the best way to fix it was to let them know that they could get ‘rub’ back from me in an attack or whatever suited them best and we would just move on in our own directions. While this really still doesn’t sit well with me, not because I am angry and feel my position is right, I really don’t like it when handlers have disagreements that they can’t or don’t easily move pass. As far as I know, that other handler and I are good…but we have zero interaction at this point. That will be a sad state of affairs should we ever have to work together, but I have to weigh the merit of keeping good relations here against the risk of truly upsetting someone that I considered a friend and a person that was a lot of fun to work with.
My point in bringing this up is seeing the chat post from Ana (which may or may not flow along the same vein, I don’t know the details…but it seems similar). I was telling someone earlier today that I am from the old school of rping where stuff like this is what moved angles along or started ones for people without them. The huge difference between then and now is that the Fed Head was responsible for approving/disapproving things like that and handlers hardly ever spoke. Back in those days, people would have real beef because there was no such thing as in and out of character, we had no means of talking to each other to work out angles or differences. Things have changed a lot since those days, most I think for the better. A lot of people who knew of me thought I had real issues with common opponents, but I can say that on the whole I never have. I have always respected tough opponents and I have never taken anything in a promo as an OOC shot. I have had exactly one spat in all my years of doing this, and I didn’t make a big ongoing deal of it…I moved on. Honestly, I really hate that it happened, and even though I don’t feel I was wrong, I am glad that I didn’t carry it around as a real OOC thing. Everything I do is in character…if you want to talk to me OOC, message me…I love it and I talk freely to any and every one.
But back to the point of using characters in segments. I am not trying to change anyone’s heart or mind on the subject, I only want to raise awareness a bit as one of the old-heads here. While I feel that me knowing every detail of what is coming on a show cheapens the results for me, I realize that what people are concerned with is that their character won’t be properly portrayed by another handler…which is a real thing that happens every show, unless you write your own matches. You may lose in a way you feel you wouldn’t lose or even win for that matter. Case in point, there was a character her that was always a face…but there was a stretch where she was winning by cheating and attacking people from behind. We kind of wondered what the deal was and my thought was, if they fed wants that…go heel then! The handler disagreed (rightly so) saying that the character was theirs and was a face and they kept pushing that in rps. This person has stronger feelings than me on the subject, because as you can see…I was just willing to do whatever, since I see it as a challenge, but I see the other side as well. I understand that I am not the author of everyone’s story and while I have my character do certain things that impact others, they may decide not to be impacted or not to work with me…ect.
While what I believe at my core has not changed, I really don’t want to know that someone is coming after me or how they will do it because I like a free hand, I see the other side of it. People lay out plans for their characters that don’t include a feud with Ron the Asshole! LOL or just don’t want to be in a particular storyline at the moment. I’d just like everyone to recognize this about their fellow handlers and play the game accordingly since there is an established rule for this. It is not to chastise anyone, because like I said…I do it or have done it, though I never speak for anyone, but I get it if people don’t want to work a certain angle or with a handler.
In my time here, I have been very proud of the lack of serious drama here. I can count it on a single hand and Jeremy has been pretty good about dealing with it. This is one of the things I love about LAW…that and the interaction, when I can get it. But this recent situation impacted both of those things for me and it really killed some of the enjoyment that I felt here. No anyone’s fault but my own, but I am mature enough to recognize that and move forward. I want to caution others against making the same mistake for the health of our fed and our in and out of character relationships.
Hi everyone, my name is Ron and I am an other character’s violator…but I am trying to work through it! LOL I recognize that some share my opinion that what happens in the ring is part of the game, but I also recognize that that view isn’t shared for various reasons. There is no finger pointing, besides the one I pointed at myself, I just want everyone to have a good time.
To that end…anyone who wants to work with me, can just put it out there and we will work. PM or Tweet me and we can do some stuff…put it on the General RP board or mention me in a rp or do something on the card. I am truly happy for any and everything because I love the interaction. However, that is me…and per the rules, that is not the way it works for or with everyone. So, by all means guys have fun with this game…but talk to your fellow handlers or at least let the Boss know that you need to vet something to make sure that feelings don’t get hurt.
That’s my two cents…no need for a reply, but so long as it is not bashing or finger pointing…its really all good. Conversely, anyone that wants to talk offline on this is welcome to DM me, Tweet me, or send me a chat on AIM. I am always happy to talk to all of you guys about the game or just life in general.
Take care all…and thanks for letting me ramble. I am NOT going to proof this…so if it looks like a 6 year old typed it…TOO BAD!!
Later guys!
