MomumenTour Show
Jones Beach
Alright everyone for those who do not know me I am Todd Warren, and today I am going to review the show I went to on June 21st of 2014 the Fallout Boy & Pararmore MomumenTour. So the venue for this concert was in Wantagh, New York Long Island.
That is the venue. It’s actually a really good venue. It was a nice breezy day considering the concert started at 7pm but for the most part the air was good. Wasn’t hot at all. Very cool, and a great day to have a concert on the beach right by the water. So this concert that I went too featured two of my favourite bands Fallout Boy along with Paramore. It was part of their big Momumentour where one isn’t the top billing. They both are, and they came together to put a cocnert together. So after being a part of Paramore’s Sold Out Show at Madison Square Garden in November of 2013 I knew I had to snag these tickets, and considering Fallout Boy is one of my favourites. I just had to attend.
New Politics
Opening for both bands was a band named New Politics. I have never heard of the band at all. Apparently they come from Denmark and what have you but I arrived a little after seven to catch about three songs from them. Surprisingly the venue was quite full. People were in the venue. The Pit looked full and people seemed to be enjoying them. I was indifferent as I went in there blind. So my opinion may not be the best. I am not a fan of a band having to drop the F bomb constantly just to get over with the crowd but I guess that is just how music is nowadays. “New York City YOU GUYS ARE FUCKING AWESOME!!!” Right… Considering we are in Long Island not NYC way to sound intelligent and know where exactly you are. But I will give them an A for effort. The crowd seemed to be going with the flow. And I even gave them an applause. A standing ovation no less…. When they announced they were leaving the stage. That was the most enjoyable part of their performance when they got off the stage to make room for the headliners. So with all things considered. And considering I know nothing of them, and judging by the reactions of the crowd.
Pros: Great crowd interaction, people were actually in the venue, and promoted their next visit back to New York area.
Cons: Who are these people? F bombs…. Don’t really know them…
Rating: 7/10. Mainly because I was in good spirits going into the show. I wasn’t as brutal as I could have been, and it set me up for the highlight of my night.
Paramore
I will try to be nonbias, as Paramore is my favourite band. So this could go either way for me really. Basing off the fact that I had attended their sold out show from Madison Square Garden 7 months prior I had high expectations for them to deliver, and boy did they raise the stakes for this show. It was high energy all around. The crowd was into it every step of the way, and everything that they did was flat out fun.
A lot of songs featured confetti streamers throwing beach balls into the crowd. It was just a great experience and unlike New Politics who I could have sworn sounded as if they were playing off of a track. I didn’t get that vibe with Paramore. I can see why Hayley is so small and such a twig. It’s because she doesn’t stop moving. She was working the stage from left to right. She wouldn’t stay in one place which honestly made it hard to snag a photo of her on my good camera. The set list was absolutely perfect and they left NOW off of it which was their first single from their current album, But in my opinion and some others no one likes NOW so that’s a plus. I had a sad face as they didn’t play Monster my personal favourite song and Kate Steele’s theme song but that’s not really a big deal. They kept the fun factor very high. Every song was fast pace, and then Hayley told everyone she knows they all love the fast angry songs, but wanted to slow things down with a love song. which started up her singing the Only Exception.
Which showcased her talent as a vocalist instead of angry Roarrrrrrrrrr… And it was honestly beautiful. Cellphone flash lights came up. Moving side to side. Was a beautiful sight. With Hayley slowing down it gave me a choice to snag this photo on my camera. First really good shot as all others were done on the phone.
Now the blue hair I hated it at first but it’s slowly growing on me. It’s actually really growing on me. It was hard to see her at times when they had the blue neon lights. She tended to blend in with it. And her attire for the night. Yes those are boxing trunks…. Weirdness...But i’ll take it. Anyway it came time for Misery Business performance. And as usual they brought someone on stage to sing it. And that person was really good. She was getting a vibe for the crowd to see who wanted to go on stage and of course she asked if someone knew the name of the song. Someone screamed Misery “Fucking:” Business. And she said she’s pretty sure that is not the name, and that Paramore is a family friendly band.
Thank you Hayley for having morals… Really thank you. They ended the night with Ain’t it Fun which was honestly my favourite song off of their new album before it was everyone’s favourite. This was honestly the first song I had on repeat for a while. So it was good. Great ending to their setlist. Great performance all around. The crowd was really into it, and to be honest 80 percent of everyone that I saw had on Paramore shirts. They are clearly the reason it sold out the Nikon Theatre. Which reminds me, she also stated how this was the first Sold Out Show of the tour. So yay for New Yorkers Turning up… Mind you they only had been touring for a week at that point, but I’ll take it. 2nd sold out show I went too of theirs and was just as good as the first one. All in all…
Rating 9.5/10
Pros: Hayley’s energy, use of the stage, streamers, crowd interaction, setlist, positive energy
Cons: Why didn’t they go on last? No Monster, Boxing Trunks?!
Fall Out Boy
How can I be blunt. Fall Out Boy was the worst band of the night. They were not that good. First of all I get what they were doing. They were promoting their new album, and they tried to carry on the gimmick of “Saving Rock & Roll” So does saving rock and roll mean you come dressed on stage like Fonz from Happy Days? God these guys are really getting old. They started off strong playing the Phoenix which was great. But then everything went downhill. They played a lot of new stuff which no one was really interested in. Everything with them was fireworks and pyros. And they made their entrance to stage using some Tool weirdness with a legit entrance video which had me going WTF? They had a 16 song set list and the best songs were Dance Dance, Sugar We’re Going Down, Grand Theft Autumn, and the Phoenix.
You sense a trend here? It was all of their old stuff. So I am supposed to believe that pyros, the special EFX equates to saving Rock and Roll. Right… Patrick Stump was dropping the F Bomb every single time, and they talked to the crowd after every song, and it was jUSt F Bombs every other word. Like seriously WHAT THE FUCK, can’t you fucking say anything besides the fucking F Word? What was worst was when Pete Wentz took the mic with his F bombs. Just shut up already. I will give them this. They did an amazing drum solo during the show. Dance, Dance was great considering they did it from the crowd. But that is where all of that ends. They even went for an encore and when they did me and my friend took our leave. We had heard all we had too at that point.
My best friend said it best. Fallout Boy was “Mediocre at Best” and normally that’s my saying and I would agree but I chimed in with “Overrated” Would FOB have sold out the venue by themselves? I don’t think so… Paramore stole the show, and when most of the people I see are wearing Paramore shirts and what have you. That’s who everyone came to see.
Pete: I can’t believe it we have made it… Four crumy punk kids from Chicago….
Yeah stay in chicago considering you couldn’t even sing CHICAGO IS SO TWO YEARS AGO NOR DEAD ON ARRIVAL…. Why not?!?!
But the Encore did consist of Thanks for the Memories, and Saturday…. Which was ok.. All in all their performance wasn’t great. They are getting quite old, and I think I expected more out of them then what they brought
Rating 5/10
Pros: Dance dance, Sugar were going down, drum solo, any old song they did.
Cons: Too many new album songs for my liking,
All in all it was a great show. It reeked of Body Odor perhaps bands should tell kids to take care of their bodies better. Deodorant works wonders. It amazes me that these were bands I was listening to years ago and you have 13 14 year old kids who are all over this stuff. That’s just crazy. The crowd was very Emo heavy. So many emo kids but that’s fine I guess. It was fun times and the worst part was paying 7 dollars for a 20 ounce bottle of Sprite and 6 dollars for a Pretzel… That’s crazy.
Good show all around. I know Paramore and FOB co headlined it, and FOB went on last because they are older but they might have to switch that up. Hayley’s high energy is hard to follow, and PAtrick wasn’t moving but he’s playing guitar so it’s probably different when you are a vocalist versus vocalist and guitarist.
Anyway that is all enjoy the read.
