Brighton beach, England. New Years Day 20.15 P.M
Maki, wearing a pink hooded top, blue jeggings and pink Adidas sneakers was strolling along the pebbled beach. She was back home and enjoying life with her friends, family and fiancé AMC. Sometimes, though, you need to escape from the madness, to feel the wind in your hair, the fresh sea air filling your senses.
Life was impossible sometimes. Having to balance relationships, friendships, life with work. You needed to find balance. She was looking forward to joining LAW primarily to have so many different and tough opponents.
She lived for the fight, for the one-upmanship, for the banter and also to be liked and respected. This was one aspect of her psychological make up she needed to analyze and improve on. Being respected and being a popularity winner was good in life but in this profession winning was all that mattered and she shouldn’t give a damn if it upsets her peers.
She kicked some pebbles in the cold British winter seaside as she thought of the women like Sam, Roxy, Angie, Ashley, Mili, Zoey who she could have some barn burners with. It was true they were people she knew and she wanted to pit her wits against and of course her friend Alicia Lukas had now signed too and this was a dream match for her in the future.
One name stood out for her. One person was the reason she signed and agreed the deal. Her friend, Mackenzie Grey, the champion of champions. Not only was she a friend but Kenzie had agreed to be her bridesmaid.
She smiles at the thought of Sarah being upset that she chose Kenzi for this role after all wasn’t she Sarah’s wife’s girlfriend? She laughed to no one in particular. The desolate beach with not even a dog on it was wondrous, as she sat on the edge of the pebbles, the water slamming into them and she listened for a few minutes.
She saw the text and was shocked at its content. Kenzi on her debut? She pressed the shiny red record button on her phone and smiled as her face popped up.
Maki: When I signed I knew I had something that was different to what you had in LAW that was not just a marketing strategy but also could bring out some unique matches and rivalries. When I was given this deal they said to me I would be thrust in against big names and expected to deliver. I was a name. I was someone that was known to bring out the best in my opponents but to give me Kenzi on my debut is something else.
A lot of people walk into a company, feel the need to brag about their past achievements, feel that stellar matches, five star ones or matches of the year mean shit when you are in a different vocational federation. They may even challenge the big names, claim they are far superior, denote their arrogance and belief in their in-ring abilities. Some just want to take short cuts to championships or future ones believing that titles mean everything.
This will be called an “Introduction” and we should all grovel at their feet, knowing that we are but peasants to their glorification of our product. My own kind of introduction will not be done with hollow words used by the psychologically weak to cover their own deficiencies. No. I will do mine with my feet and fists.
The words, made her feel sick to her stomach, reminding her of all the so called “badasses” that had said the same thing to her.
Maki: The next portion of this “Introduction” will be to say who and how you will demolish them, what your skills are, how amazing you are at broken bones, making everyone bleed, and just gave them the wins now. Again, I shall not do that. I shall not sit here and say how I shall beat this person or that person, how I will annihilate Kenzi in our match, how the champion of champions should just lay down and let me pin her. Those are words for the misinformed miscreants of which I have seen a few on the roster here.
It has come to my attention how people feel I am favoured by either being friends or acquaintances with a few on the roster, my links to the Cool Kids and even someone I have had sexual relations with before will impact how well I do here negatively or even positively. Do you think I have lasted this long living off friendships and sexual conquests to make my name?
She spat the words with vehemence. She was never and has never been a cool kid. She knew who was behind these rumours.
Maki: What I do outside of my profession is my business alone and what I do inside of a ring or in a match is business. I will not shy away from hurting my friends if they stand in my way. I am at the bottom of the totem pole here and I have the chance to make my name on my first match and I will do so. I will work my way up to a title match but in the end a trinket doesn’t make me the best in the world. My matches, over time, will do that for me.
She smiled at the thought of her "grappling" with Kenzi. Of beating the Champion of Champions.
Maki: Kenzi, I know how strong you are, how difficult it is to put you away, I know you strengths and weaknesses as you know mine. I also know you will be doing your research, maybe even asking AMC’s advice or Ali as she has witnessed me fighting alongside her, which I really hope you do. I want nothing but your very best. For if I was to beat an under par Kenzi Grey then it would take that achievement of beating you away from me. I don’t want to ruin that beautiful face, Kenz, but if I have to and it’s needed to win then I will do so. A fair warning in advance.
Also I know all about you Etsuko. If you even think about interfering again and hurting Kenz or even disrupting my victory just to get at Kenz I will knock you out quicker than you can say Kon'nichiwa.
She looks out into the sea again as the sounds of the waves crashing echoes through her very essence. Her phone buzzes again. It’s AMC wondering where she is. She doesn’t reply. She gets up, looks at the stars and smiles to herself knowing that she will get to be up close and personal with Kenzi very soon.
