“I am okay with this.”
Etsuko stands in the backstage area where a fan has greeted her with a bow while offering out some slip of paper. A note, by the looks of it. Handwritten even. Etsuko remains unmoved, however, as she eventually turns away and starts walking down the hall leaving the man to drop to his knees clutching the note tightly.
“There are several rumors flying about for the Red Lady. One that likes to make the rounds is that She is asexual. A tougher form of this rumor is that She had the word, act, and related speaking of the term “sex” ripped from Her vocabulary. Whatever the case, it is not a forced practice upon the Followers of Red.”
Sitting at a table now inside the cabin, Etsuko looks across to the woman in black leather with dark hair tied back into a tight ponytail. One, which any tighter and her face might be ripped in half from her nose. She talks with Domino while Etsuko's handler simply listens.
“Some of these rumors come from the personal beliefs of those who come to us. We are the shadow of Twilight Manor, after all, the closest any Follower could come to our Goddess to rest, to talk, to admire.”
Despite the smiling features of the leather clad woman as she goes on, Domino only nods keeping her own emotions in check.
“Over the years there have been many Followers to make the pilgrimage. Those that wish to talk and share.”
Etsuko sits at the porch watching out as Domino leads a service to a pair of kneeling females, the pair of whom are facing away from Twilight Manor.
“Those that wish to pray.”
At night, a young charge sneaks her way through the open field toward Twilight Manor dragging herself army style by her forearms in hops of remaining undetected. That is until Etsuko hops from nowhere giving the Bunny Hop to their spine.
“And those that are too curious or simply wish to trespass. So they come here as the golden rule is that the doors of Twilight Manor are rarely opened to Followers. Yet every time they come, one question is always asked.”
Woman in leather: Have you seen the Goddess?
“Miss. Domino tells the handler the same story she had told me. While she has never seen the Red Lady, she has heard her. It is always enough to draw curiosity as Miss. Domino explains her time as a maid within Twilight Manor's many halls. She was informed ahead of time that the Goddess would be in attendance and to listen for the double tap. When she heard, Miss. Domino would immediately dive down into a bowing position pressing her face to the floor while covering up the sides of her eyes with her hands only to hear the footsteps of the Goddess pass by. Whenever asked if she was tempted to look...she would become stern and say “no” before changing the subject. Any true Follower would know that to gaze upon the Red Lady would answer too many questions too quickly.”
“She was married once.”
Domino laughs as she holds her bride Candi close, the two making their way into the cabin to begin their new lives together.
“But love cannot exist if it is not within the boundaries of our rules. Rules that invoke control. Rules that some do not take seriously and others who take them too far.”
Back at the table, Etsuko rests a hand to her collar when she notices the leather clad woman's leash dangling from her wrist. It slides along the table and is connected to a small framed blond woman who simply sits beside Etsuko keeping entirely to herself. Her hands clasped between her thighs and head hung low, she only shows signs of life when she feels a jostle in her lead.
“There are times I forget about my own collar. Miss. Nikki once held the key but she is lost to us now. Stuffed deep inside the hallowed halls of Twilight Manor. At moments though, I am reminded as I am as quickly reminded of the rules.”
Etsuko snaps down on the blonds collar with a bolt cutter as the woman in leather is tossed from the cabin warned to never trespass again.
“The woman is irate as she leaves, but it bothers neither of us. There are many who come here and there are enough that need reminding of the guidelines. We do not force. We open up.”
Etsuko offers down a hand to the blond and smiles even as she explains in effort to calm the girl down. The entire time her attention is to Etsuko's hand. Though soon, the sparkling blue eyes are up to the charge's own. The first time she ever looked at anything aside from her own hands pressed between her lap.
“We do not kidnap. We do not force. We do not operate a slave ring. The thousands that there are, all scattered across the globe, we were welcomed. Sought out. Recruited. We were given the opportunity to better ourselves from outlook to lives.”
The young woman accepts Etsuko's hand and is swiftly brought back to her feet.
“Some serve in their own way, outside the heirarchy. Miss. Renee, Miss. Domino's maid, is proof of that to me. The first church is also proof of this. A gathering zone where hymns are created and sermons are held.”
Etsuko sits in at one of these events nestled deep into the pews as a choir all dressed in red sing to an organ played off to the side. Throughout the hymn, one choir members eyes remain fixed from the choir mistress to a patron. Etsuko. Her blond hair kept smoothly back in behind her shoulders as her blue eyes sparkle under the light.
“We all worship in our own way.”
After the performance has ended, Etsuko stands with the blond choir girl alone at the altar. The girls head is lowered once more as she clutches tightly to the material of her gown just over her heart. Tears stream from her eyes as Etsuko simply turns and starts down the aisleway ignoring as the blond makes one last desperate call out to her.
“I am okay with this.”
The service ends and the Followers rise to leave under the blessings of their Goddess. Etsuko remains seated watching over at the choir where a small gathering has taken form discussing plans. Among them was a nodding blond with crystal blue eyes. Her attention wasn't returned to the Joshi who rises from the pew and approaches the altar to look up. There was no saint, no angelic figure, no representation even of the Red Lady aside from a set of flowing red curtains hanging toward the rafters high up above Etsuko. The choir leaves and Etsuko is fully alone now in the First Church touching her fingers to the altar.
Etsuko: This...makes it real. Doesn't it? Before people took it as some insane...C-word. It is a term I will not address even now.
She states turning around to look across the empty pews.
Etsuko: Miss. Clementine, as I will not refer to your other title, I will say this; I am disappointed with who you are. An admitted otaku, you live your life by the code set and designed by another. While I understand this places us within the same camp, that is where our similarities end.
And her brow generally furrows.
Etsuko: As it would seem yours is a style made for entertainment, I take the lessons I am given and perform with them for the sole purpose of bettering myself. I have made a name for myself as the Oni of the Red Lady while you...have made yourself a mimic.
She almost seems to spit that part out, but I suppose spitting within the First Church isn't permitted. Would make sense.
Etsuko: That you would also go so far as to bite upon your opponents is in itself disturbing. But bite down on me and you will find it a mistake to allow yourself that close. You will be caught, you will be dropped, and both of my feet will come down hard upon your face. Perhaps harder than necessary.
In that her aim might be to take out Clementine's chompers. But I don't think Etsuko has a license for dentistry.
Etsuko: However, this is not a battle of who we are, it is a fight of what we will bring. Bring your entertainment, your jokes, your songs, your dances, and laughs. I will bring the clarity granted upon me by the ever glowing grace of the Goddess. You will not stun me, you will not find me distracted. Victory comes to those who wait, just ask the lions.
Candi's a lion. Rawr.
Etsuko: So my advice to you, Miss. Clementine, is get serious quick. You have a few days before our encounter, go to a fair and amuse yourself. When the bell rings you will not have the opportunity for that again. All as I will be looking to defeat you swiftly as I require something else for someone else.
Of course.
Etsuko: Yes, Miss. Clementine, while you look at this as your welcome into LAW, I look at this as a stepping stone. Miss. Kenzi made a point that if I cannot defeat you then there is no point in issuing my challenge for the Breakout Title. Seeing as that is all I am after right now...
And with Kenzi's mention Etsuko tilts her head along to the other side.
Etsuko: Miss. Kenzi, you should not adjust your hearing. I did say “the” not “yours”. Unless you wish to dishonor your career by further declaring yourself a champion.
This joshi and her honor, am I right?
Etsuko: As I found myself with the title following a victory over the worthy Miss. Orchid, you simply showed that you could climb a ladder one more time than everyone else. This win does not show the path you have taken to acquire the belt, any novice first entering a gym can climb a ladder and swing out their hand. That is why, Miss. Kenzi, I hope you will listen to my words after I have defeated Miss. Clementine. My challenge to you will be made complete and you will be forced to show both your honor and path.
She looks about finished but she suddenly appears to have something else on mind before she can leave.
Etsuko: Though make no mistake, Miss. Kenzi, and I am destined for punishment upon my own egocentric beliefs, but neither your honor or path will be enough to defeat me as I will not only reclaim what is rightfully mine...but what is rightful property of the Red Lady.
Now she turns to depart as the scene
fades in red
