Los Angeles, California
Hollywood Hills
The Home of Crystal Hilton
Seleana Zdunich sits on the couch in a black American Murder Log t-shirt and a pair of tight blue jeans, her bare feet showing her comfort at holding court in this house for the moment. This was unusual for her but this was also an unusual situation since she’d never had a time to have actual company come to the place.
Today, that was changing.
Sitting across from her were her middle sister, red-headed Zenna Zdunich, wearing a matching black t-shirt and black jeans ensemble, along with Zenna’s fiancée, Linnéa Lacroix. Linnéa, wearing a third American Murder Log t-shirt and jeans outfit, smiles, her long black hair contrasting against the Zdunich Sisters’ respective blonde and red. Zenna and Linnéa had come to Los Angeles to check in on Seleana after the funeral for Jamilyn Cornett they had all attended mid-week but also to scout a possible venue for an upcoming concert for their band, the aforementioned American Murder Log. As they sit there, nominally discussing a trip to Guitar Center Hollywood, Seleana sighs. She didn’t mean to end the excitement but she couldn’t seem to stop the sense of melancholy washing over her.
Seleana Zdunich: It is a strange feeling…
Linnéa frowns in confusion. Seleana was not usually the one who was prone to fits of such gloom with an undertone of doom. That was usually left to Zenna, Linnéa and the other two members of American Murder Log that lived with them in their New Orleans home, Linnéa’s sister, Alissa, and Alissa’s English girlfriend, Kelly Taylor. All four were in recovery from various substance abuse issues and all four were given to such predilections of sadness as a symptom or side-effect of said condition.
Linnéa Lacroix: What is?
Sighing again at her poor choice of words, Seleana rocks back in her seat, her fingers clasping together just to give them something to do.
Seleana Zdunich: I suppose that should have been a different counting because it’s many.
Zenna nods slowly at her elder sister, wishing for all the world that she could help take Seleana’s pain away.
Zenna Zdunich: Quite the up and down for you, ja?
Seleana nods, almost too quickly to this question.
Seleana Zdunich: First we get engaged then Jami…
She pauses, not quite being able to bring herself to mention the actual word to describe Jamilyn’s status.
Seleana Zdunich: Then Eavan…
She cuts herself off again before mentioning their former sister-in-law, Eavan Maloney, and her alcoholic stumble of forty-fight hours previous.
Linnéa Lacroix: She did sort of freak out and leave early over nothing, ain’t she?
Zenna shakes her head.
Zenna Zdunich: I don’t think it was nothing. I think she was cooking before she got there and was just overwhelmed by the whole experience. I was talking to her as she was leaving and she took that word to mean something else.
Linnéa just stares at her fiancée.
Linnéa Lacroix: She thought you were accusing of her of being high, didn’t she?
Zenna nods.
Zenna Zdunich: Ja, she did.
Seleana sighs sadly yet again.
Seleana Zdunich: I wish we’d been able to make her feel more comfortable but I guess that was never going to happen with so many people she has hurt or have hurt her there as well.
Now it was Linnéa’s turn to sigh.
Linnéa Lacroix: Drugs make you do weird things, Sarabi. It made her get into a really nasty fight with Ash, made her burn the bridge with Stacy Jones…
Zenna nods, adding to the sense of melancholy in the room.
Zenna Zdunich: Cost her Kattunge…
Linnéa shrugs her agreement.
Linnéa Lacroix: God knows they made us do crazy things at times too.
Hoping to cut through the gloom she, herself, started, Seleana forces a smile.
Seleana Zdunich: I’ve asked her to be one of my bridesmaids.
Both Linnéa and Zenna’s heads turn as if on a swivel in shock. They knew full well this was not likely to be a Seleana decision given the Swedish custom of a single attendant for each bride and/or groom.
Linnéa Lacroix: One of?
Zenna nods almost too forcefully, her shock showing brightly.
Zenna Zdunich: You are having more than one?
Seleana shrugs, the answer clear.
Seleana Zdunich: Crystal wants to have an American-style wedding where we have many for each of us. She has already asked Mama Red, Zoey, Roxi Johnson and another called Natalie McKinley.
Linnéa and Zenna nod to each name as if going down a checklist.
Linnéa Lacroix: And you’ve asked Eavan?
Seleana smiles, nodding sweetly.
Seleana Zdunich: Yes, I wanted her to remember she’s still family.
Zenna smiles back at her sister.
Zenna Zdunich: Bless you, Sarabi!
Linnéa nods her agreement as well and Seleana shrugs, trying not to take too much praise for something she doesn’t consider overly important at present.
Seleana Zdunich: I can find my others after tomorrow.
Linnéa nods again at the mention of the L.A.W. Pay-Per-View that Seleana was going to be fighting on the very next day.
Linnéa Lacroix: Probably a good idea, yes, you never forget the first time you’re on pay-per-view. Having your name on the announced card meaning there are actually people who tune in just to see you.
Zenna smiles, memories flooding back from her first time on a pay-per-view broadcast in 2011 for the now-defunct New Era Wrestling.
Zenna Zdunich: It is quite the feeling.
Seleana just stares back at the two in shock.
Seleana Zdunich: What?
This thought had never entered her mind.
Seleana Zdunich: What do you mean... just to see me?
Linnéa can’t help but smile at Seleana’s humble ignorance and naiveté.
Linnéa Lacroix: Hon, that’s why they announce matches in advance. They announce things they think will get people interested enough that they will pay for the privilege of watching the action.
Smiling in accordance with this thought, Zenna simply shrugs.
Zenna Zdunich: In your case, the privilege of watching you make Maria eat everything she’s said and done in the last few months.
Seleana nods, the smile fading as she stares into the distance, another shade of melancholia washing over her.
Seleana Zdunich: I never thought I could come to feel about someone the way do towards her.
Zenna and Linnéa both turn to look back at her, both nodding sympathetically.
Seleana Zdunich: At first, I felt sorry for her…
Zenna’s sympathy turns to confusion as shwe frowns at her sister.
Zenna Zdunich: Why?
Seleana swallows hard, her thoughts trying to swim in a million directions at once.
Seleana Zdunich: Because she and Crystal had been great friends and then had a falling out at her wedding.
Linnéa can’t help but almost scoff.
Linnéa Lacroix: Bangin’ the groom will kinda do that.
Seleana manages a small nod, still sort of lost in her thoughts.
Seleana Zdunich: And so I felt sorry for her because I had seen who she used to be, what they used to be. It was sad because she used to be such a nice person, someone I would have liked to have called friend. She and Crystal were as close as two can be without adding romance to the equation.
Zenna’s eyes narrow.
Zenna Zdunich: Are you sure they didn’t?
Linnéa shrugs inquisitively.
Linnéa Lacroix: Are you sure one of them didn’t want to?
Seleana shrugs.
Seleana Zdunich: I do not know everything about their relationship, just that it was once sisterly close and now is anything but.
As Zenna and Linnéa nod, the owner of the home, Crystal, and her daughter, Brittany Williams, walk into the room.
Crystal Hilton: Hey, Babe, did you tell them?
Linnéa and Zenna both frown in confusion again.
Zenna Zdunich: Tell us what?
Brittany grins just like her mother.
Brittany Williams: They picked a date!
Zenna and Linnéa turn to face Seleana, who nods slowly.
Seleana Zdunich: Thirteenth July…
Linnéa smiles while Zenna sits there quietly.
Linnéa Lacroix: The day before my birthday?
Crystal nods as if it’s the most obvious answer ever.
Crystal Hilton: She knew it was an important date for me so it seemed perfect, you know, just like me!
Crystal walks over and kisses Seleana lovingly.
Crystal Hilton: Just like tomorrow night will be. I stay champion and you show that I don’t date scrubs!
Linnéa and Zenna both nod their concurrence.
Linnéa Lacroix: Here here!
Brittany nods as well.
Brittany Williams: You’re gonna be great.
Seleana beams.
Seleana Zdunich: I love my family.
Crystal shrugs, again, as if this should be obvious.
Crystal Hilton: Hey, what’s not to love?
Seleana smiles and kisses Crystal again.
Seleana Zdunich: Absolutely nothing, Chickie! ¡Te amo!
A few hours later…
The camera opens and finds Seleana standing in the terminal of LAX, waiting for her flight to Nashville for Rising Stars. Sitting off to the side just off camera are Crystal, Brittany, Zenna and Linnéa, all waiting for the same flight.
Seleana Zdunich: LIke the shirt? It’s for what I like to call the best band in the world, my sisters, American Murder Log. I always have loved that name even if three fifths of the band are not American because it describes who they are. They are five ladies who came together in Louisiana to rise out of their swamp and conquer the world!
She pauses, smiling to herself.
Seleana Zdunich: I love them, they are my sisters…
The smile starts to slowly fade off as she looks into the camera, a question in her eyes.
Seleana Zdunich: That’s something Crystal used to be able to say to you Maria, is it not?
She nods, as if begging an answer from somebody close to her.
Seleana Zdunich: You two were as close as close can be and then it all went to hell. Crystal made a mistake and you told her that when it came to your friendship, “fuhgeddaboudit.”
Shrugging almost apologetically, Seleana
Seleana Zdunich: I know I am probably saying that wrong but it is what you say, ja?
She glances down at her feet for a moment, as if the feeling rushing through her is one she is ashamed of having. After a second, she looks back up into the camera.
Seleana Zdunich: I’m not going to stand here and tell you that Crystal did nothing wrong and I’m not going to say you were wrong to be angry with her. If the camera would turn, you can see she can hear me and I am saying this to her face.
The camera turns to see Crystal, Brittany, Zenna and Linnéa all sitting together in a row of seats. They all wave in acknowledgement before the camera turns back to Seleana.
Seleana Zdunich: But I am going to stand here and say what you did after…
She shakes her head as she draws in a deep, sharp breath.
Seleana Zdunich: That was unwarranted and made you twice as bad as anything Crystal had done to you. If you had chosen to keep it between the two of you, no one would be able to question you. If they did, you rather rightly tell them, “fuhgeddaboudit.” but you didn’t do that, did you?
She shakes her head almost sadly.
Seleana Zdunich: No, you could not. You decided to play your little gangster fantasy and pretend you were named Corleone or Soprano or any of a dozen other characters from old classic movies or television shows and you grabbed Brittany over there. Then you made her do things because, well, hey, you could, ja?
Seleana looks into the camera and then shakes her head to answer her own question.
Seleana Zdunich: But even that wasn’t enough for you, was it?
Again, she shakes her head, this time anger overtaking the sadness.
Seleana Zdunich: Oh no because then you had to come to me and start in on me, a person you had never met and never so much as said boo to simply because I had the fortune to be dating Crystal and you hoped you’d scare me off or otherwise do something to ruin Crystal’s life and for what?
Seleana throws her hands up in exasperation.
Seleana Zdunich: Did she ruin your life by doing what she did?
She looks pointedly, waiting for an ser she knows will never come.
Seleana Zdunich: Did she end your marriage before it started?
Again, she nods pointedly.
Seleana Zdunich: Did she stop being your friend?
Her hand waves dismissively to the camera, her anger visibly building.
Seleana Zdunich: No! None of that! Your marriage still happened, your life went on as you chose it and you chose to say“fuhgeddaboudit” to the friendship.
Nodding pointedly again, this time she adds an accusatory point at the camera.
Seleana Zdunich: If anyone ruined your life, it wasn’t Crystal, it was you!
Her hand drops to her side again as she glares into the camera.
Seleana Zdunich: YOU said “fuhgeddaboudit” to your close friend. YOU said “fuhgeddaboudit” to being a nice, beloved figure to the public. YOU said “fuhgeddaboudit” to treating Brittany well and YOU said “fuhgeddaboudit” to any shot of having a friendship with me before it could even start and all because you wanted to prove you were a real street tough when you clearly are nothing of the sort! I used to watch animals like you try and challenge the true tough ones in their groups back in Christchurch at Orana Park. The poor things would act like they could take the alphas and they always ended up regretting it when the alphas showed them for the pretenders they were! They would walk up and the alpha would truly say to them, “Fuhgeddaboudit!”
The glare intensifies, anger and hatred radiating out from her eyes.
Seleana Zdunich: You tried to ruin Crystal’s life, you tried to ruin Brittany’s life and you tried to ruin mine. You told me you would end my career before it even started and you tried to take away my family before we could even make it official. Well just like my family, which is becoming official whether you like it or not, tomorrow night, I show you that that you jumped on the wrong Cat! I’m gonna make you regret making me actually hate someone for the first time in my life, Maria. I never wanted to feel that and now, because of you, I have to admit that I do and it feels awful! I never want to feel this again and I am going to make damn sure you regret being the cause of this so when it comes to you being that bad ass street tough gangster you claim to be?
Seleana shakes her head.
Seleana Zdunich: Fuhgeddaboudit!
