The Home of Crystal Hilton
2:35 PM PDT
Seleana Zdunich sits on the couch in the den of the home she currently shares with her fiancée, fellow wrestler and current L.A.W. Marquee Champion, Crystal Hilton, and future stepdaughter, Brittany Williams, staring at the television as she scrolls through the seemingly endless choices of things to watch. Waiting was never fun, especially when Crystal was off to a business meeting of some sort and Brittany had also had some kind of engagement to attend. This was one of the parts of being involved, even tangentially, in the entertainment business that was taking some getting used to for her. As she scrolls on by a few more possibilities, her phone signals that she will soon have a respite upon her. She glances down, sees her middle sister’s name and smiles as she answers it.
Seleana Zdunich: Heya, Shenzi, how’s it?
Zenna Zdunich’s voice comes back bright and clear, audibly just as happy to hear her big sister’s voice as Seleana is to hear hers.
Zenna Zdunich: Bit weird, actually. Having to get ready for both matches and a tour at the same time. Adriana and her father are gonna push us a bit, I guess. How’s it with you?
Seleana starts to answer only to catch herself and pause. What kind of answer was the truth in this case? She blinks hard at the phone and then sighs sadly.
Seleana Zdunich: Still kinda awkward.
Hearing the tension in Seleana’s voice, Zenna immediately catches on to where her sister is coming from.
Zenna Zdunich: The Nova match?
Seleana nods almost involuntarily.
Seleana Zdunich: Yeah, it’s…
Seleana trails off again and Zenna picks the ball up right there.
Zenna Zdunich: It’s always strange having to wrestle someone who’s effectively part of the family. I think I would have the same problem with wrestling Eavan or Angel.
Unable to stop herself again, Seleana nods her agreement despite knowing that Zenna can’t actually see the gesture.
Seleana Zdunich: Yeah, as would I, Chickie, as would I.
Zenna exhales heavily, contemplating things the same way Seleana is.
Zenna Zdunich: Didn’t Alexi talk to you about them?
Seleana manages a small smile at the mention of their cousin.
Seleana Zdunich: Ja, she did. Told me all about Declan and his ways and what it might mean if he’s rubbed off on Nova.
Seleana stares sadly at the television before turning it off, the shot of a redhead in a commercial for reruns of an old Disney Channel show.
Zenna Zdunich: She tell you Lis dated his cousin too?
Seleana looks up, slightly stunned though not wanting to admit it.
Seleana Zdunich: I think I’ve heard that as well, just not sure where. What happened there?
This time it’s Zenna’s turn to take a deep breath and sigh sadly.
Zenna Zdunich: He got photographed overseas with his ex-girlfriend. Lis tried to blow it off as media bullshit only for him to confess it wasn’t.
Seleana sits up, shaking her head at the thought of that situation becoming a reality for somebody, especially one so close to her
Seleana Zdunich: Poor Lis…
She continues to shake her head as Zenna picks up the story somewhat.
Zenna Zdunich: Yeah, after what had happened with Johnny, Xavier, Ross, Raw and then all the stuff with Kerryn, I think that just sent her tumbling into the abyss. I know it would have with me. Johnny basically left her for a Disney starlet, Xavier accused her of being a gold digging whore, Raw actually treated her like a coke whore and Ross...
Zenna trails off and Seleana nods, all of the details floating together in her brain.
Seleana Zdunich: I do not know what it would have done to me.
Zenna chuckles, hoping to lighten the mood a little.
Zenna Zdunich: I’m amazed you haven’t had any close encounters out there in Hollywood while you try however many different new jobs.
She pauses, Seleana just kinda shrugging to herself.
Zenna Zdunich: Wrestler, actress, any others?
Seleana shakes her head in a negative answer.
Seleana Zdunich: Right now, wrestling’s enough of a handful what with how Maria and now Nova have been. I realize I’m new and unpolished but is everybody this…
Seleana’s thoughts float out into space as she tries to think of the proper phrase to use to describe both of these recent opponent’s attitudes.
Zenna Zdunich: Up their own ass?
Seleana snickers in spite of herself at her sister’s bluntness.
Seleana Zdunich: I guess that is the saying, yes.
Zenna snickers as well.
Zenna Zdunich: Well, the one you mentioned was a supposed Italian mobster princess type, was she not?
Seleana rolls her eyes at this description.
Seleana Zdunich: So she said, yes.
Zenna’s voice takes on a knowing tone.
Zenna Zdunich: Well, that’s probably your answer right there, Sarabi.
Seleana frowns in confusion.
Seleana Zdunich: What is?
The knowing tone intensifies.
Zenna Zdunich: You’re still Mamma Seleana…
Seleana can’t help but smile at this name.
Seleana Zdunich: Brittany started calling me that lately actually. She says it like Mamá Seleana but it is what she has taken to calling me.
Zenna can seemingly see the light coming off her sister’s smile.
Zenna Zdunich: You cried the first time, didn’t you?
Seleana nods, the memory flooding back to her, her eyes moistening as it does.
Seleana Zdunich: I did.
Zenna allows herself a small hum of happiness.
Zenna Zdunich: I’m happy for you, Sarabi, but that’s what I mean. Wasn’t she rather horrible to you while she was in that Maria woman’s custody?
Seleana frowns slightly.
Seleana Zdunich: I wouldn’t call it terrible…
Zenna’s tone gets a little annoyed along with the knowing part.
Zenna Zdunich: Was she or was she not exactly nice to you?
Seleana exhales heavily, trying to think of a way to deny it and quickly realizing there isn’t one without lying through her teeth.
Seleana Zdunich: Yeah.. she…
She can almost see Zenna nod accordingly.
Zenna Zdunich: Mhm, and yet, you never gave up on her, did you? No matter what Maria had her do, no matter how she made herself sound and even though you had never met her before, you never gave up on her, did you?
Seleana sits on the couch and stares straight ahead, the question catching her off-guard and hitting like a ton of bricks.
Seleana Zdunich: I...
She looks at her feet, her eyes wide and then shakes her head.
Seleana Zdunich: No… no I did not.
Zenna exhales, her voice suddenly full of pride.
Zenna Zdunich: Mamma Seleana couldn’t, could she?
Seleana’s eyes moisten all over again.
Seleana Zdunich: No… I couldn’t…
A tear starts to trickle down Seleana’s cheek as the thought of such a thing stares her in the face.
Zenna Zdunich: You accepted her, no matter what, and had faith she would come back as if she was your own. Just like you do with Crystal and the things that happen with her, don’t you?
Seleana nods.
Seleana Zdunich: Ja.
Zenna takes a deep breath.
Zenna Zdunich: And you did the same with me and Li…
Seleana sits up, another tear chasing the other one down her cheek.
Seleana Zdunich: Självklart!
Zenna’s voice practically beams its own smile over the airwaves.
Zenna Zdunich: Even when we were at our worst and had fallen after rehab, you never gave up on seeing the best in us, did you?
Seleana nods yet again.
Seleana Zdunich: You’re my sister, Zenna. I knew you were in there somewhere even when you tried to bury yourself in things. I knew you would find your way back.
Zenna clicks approvingly.
Zenna Zdunich: Mhm, and that’s why Nova is messing with you so much. You met her when she was a nice girl, just shining her sunshine all over every which way and because she’s almost young enough to be yours, you see her as that no matter what. You see it inside of her and so when she acts opposite of that, you want to give her the benefit of the doubt. Alexi and Robbie told you about Declan and how he is and you see the good there as well. It’s who you are. It’s what drew Twain to you and it’s what has enthralled Crystal too. It’s what made you good at your job in Christchurch and it’s why you can’t believe that this Nova is the real one.
Seleana stares ahead of her again as her sister pauses.
Zenna Zdunich: To answer your question from before? No, not everybody is up their own ass like that but a lot of us are. In order to do what we do, you have to have a healthy ego about it and some take that to bad levels. It turns otherwise good people into needy cunts who think the world should their oyster twenty-four/seven and when it’s not, they convince themselves they’re being done wrong and thus need to do something about it.
Seleana swallows hard and then nods understandingly.
Seleana Zdunich: So what do I do, Z? She keeps saying she’s not really gonna hurt me but talks like it’s a foregone conclusion that if she wanted to, she could.
Zenna exhales forcefully.
Zenna Zdunich: You’re gonna have to decide to prove her wrong, Sel. You have to decide you’re ready to go to that ring and be a pro instead of a disappointed…
She trails off without saying the last word but Seleana nods her understanding.
Seleana Zdunich: You’re right, Z, I do…
She pauses and manages a small, sad smile.
Seleana Zdunich: Tack, Shenzi. Jag älskar dig syster!
Zenna’s voice comes back quickly.
Zenna Zdunich: Jag älskar dig också, Sarabi!
A couple of hours later…
The camera opens upon Seleana standing in the same little side room she was in last time, obviously her phone on the selfie stick again, this time being held up by some kind of jury rigged system that allows Seleana to nod have to hold onto the stick itself. She exhales and looks into the camera.
Seleana Zdunich: Yes…
She nods, looking slightly annoyed.
Seleana Zdunich: Yes, it is awkward because like it or not, we are family, Nova. Fighting with your family might mean something different where you are from but where I am from, it does not mean you have to enjoy or look forward to such things. If I were to be booked against my sister, Zenna, or my cousin, Alexi, or any of my other family that wrestles I would feel the same apprehension because I know that there is always a chance that things can happen in the heat of the moment that cause sour feelings afterward.
Her gaze moves to meet the camera more straight on.
Seleana Zdunich: That is something I wish to avoid with my family…
She pauses and then nods pointedly to the camera.
Seleana Zdunich: Including you.
Stepping back, her hands start to rub against each other and fold over.
Seleana Zdunich: Yes, Crystal got me into wrestling and yes, you have received more training than I have. That can be said for everyone I step into the ring with. I have not yet been in this country for a full year as of now and when I have achieved that milestone, I hope I still have not lost what you called me. I still see things…
She trails off and nods slightly.
Seleana Zdunich: You can call it idealistic or naïve if you wish, but that does not mean I do not see things as they are, Nova. You have developed an attitude that belies your talent because it implies that you require things you do not actually need. You do not need Reagan or the other two to be there. You never needed them before and you don’t need them now just like you would not need Declan or Rain or GoGo to be there. You do not need to go to the places you speak of going to and you do not need to do the things that are constantly mentioned around your name now.
She pauses to look down, a small smile coming to her face.
Seleana Zdunich: My sister was talking to me about you and she called me the same thing Brittany has started calling me, “Mamá Seleana.”
She looks back up into the camera, still smiling to herself.
Seleana Zdunich: She said it meant I tend to see the good in people the way a mother would even when their child is misbehaving and I’ve heard rumors that your own has said such about you lately.
Taking a deep breath, Seleana nods to the camera.
Seleana Zdunich: Well I still see that girl you mentioned in there, Nova. You are smart, talented, beautiful and you seemed to be on the bullet train to a championship when you took your sabbatical. I’m sure you had your reasons for doing so but your return raises... questions…
Her head cocks slightly to the right as the smile fades to a full-on frown.
Seleana Zdunich: Why would someone with such talents and abilities and the training to make both mean something think she needs the kind of entourage you walk around with now?
She pauses, folding her arms across her chest and tapping at her bottom lip with her right index finger as she ponders this question.
Seleana Zdunich: And I’m led to only certain possibilities…
Her arms drop to her sides again.
Seleana Zdunich: Either you are paranoid that everyone in L.A.W. is out to get you for one reason or another and you are unsure of yourself and your ability to fight off your wouldbe attackers in that situation…
Her head cocks over to the left.
Seleana Zdunich: Or...
The frown intensifies slightly.
Seleana Zdunich: This entire new attitude is a put-on designed to disguise that you really don’t believe in yourself at all and that when you say you were born ready, you have no real concept of what that actually entails so you have surrounded yourself with people who can take care of that problem for you in whatever form you may require that remedy to take.
Her eyes narrow as she stares into the camera, seemingly searching for the depths of Nova’s soul.
Seleana Zdunich: A third possibility, that a combination of the two could also be the accurate assessment also exists and that is troubling to ponder despite the preponderance of evidence at hand. You are undoubtedly afraid of something, Nova, be it the other wrestlers or your own inadequacy and whatever the truth of that is, the sad part is on paper, you shouldn’t be. You should be the next great champion to etch her name into the record books and yet, that entourage that surrounds you says you don’t think you can actually do it without help.
Her eyes remain narrowed as she nods ever so slightly three times in rapid succession.
Seleana Zdunich: Someone once told me of a Henry Ford quote, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can't--you're right.” and you seem to be walking, talking proof of this theorem. When you thought you could, you did and now that you think you cannot…
She takes a deep breath, her gaze never losing eye contact with the camera.
Seleana Zdunich: I asked you before if you were ready and you attempted to turn that question around on me. My mistake was not in asking you an absurd question because, given your squad of glad-handing, ass-kissing yesmen, it’s not absurd at all. My mistake was in not saying you should pull your head from your backside and realize your own potential. You want everyone to look at you and say, “There goes Nova Sinclair, the best ever!” and indeed, you have the talent to do so but you will not so long as you continue acting as you are and continue using shortcuts and go-betweens to get there. I am ready to teach you that lesson, Nova, whether you like it or not. I am Mamá Seleana and I am ready to show you that you should knock this skit off because you are so much better than this…
Her gaze takes on a disappointed glare.
Seleana Zdunich: And I am going to drag the good I see in you back out of you in front of the world!
Shaking her head, she starts for the door.
Seleana Zdunich: Kia kaha, Chickie, you’re gonna need it!
