I slipped back into my sister’s apartment after my adventurous and rather eventful day out in the city. Though Uzai had insisted on coming with me, I had to tell him that her place was barely big enough for her alone…not that she would have ever entertained the idea of a stranger coming in with me. I knew it was a stretch for her to accept me, and for that I was grateful to her. She was really trying her best with me…so I had no intention of messing any of it up.
As I walked in, I saw her walking out of her room, freshly showered from an afternoon workout, no doubt. I plastered a broad smile across my face as I held up a bag of Korean barbeque.
“Look what I found! This isn’t like that American stuff…this is just like home!”
I walked in and sat the bag down on the counter…
…Oops…
I swore to myself as I realized that I hadn’t bothered to hide the side of my face that sported a rather prominent bruise from my antics in the alley…
…Such a liar…you wanted her to see it…you wanted her to see what I did…
I tried to carry on, in the hopes that she didn’t see the mark or the way I favored the side of my body that wasn’t riddled with foot sized welts and bruises of their own.
Nyako continued to dry her hair as she made her way over to her kitchen area, taking in the smalls of the food brought in by her sister.
She closed her eyes as she took in the aroma of the barbecue. The scents reminded her of home and the few times they were all happy as a family as they were few and far between.
A small smile crossed her face as she slowly opened her eyes, only to see the welts on her sisters face. He look of bliss quickly turned to one of concern and confusion as she took on the sight of her sister asa whole. Oni was all battered and bruised and evenb has a few cuts along her face and arms.
"What happened?" Nyako asked as her concern slowly turned to anger. "Who did this to you Kymiku?"
The rage started to boil up inside of her as the only thing on her mind was to protect her sister. Something that even caught her by surprise a bit as she never felt she needed to in the past since Oni always seemed to take care of herself. But Nyako's familiar, and sisterly instinct kicked in as it had with their brother Senji.
Nyako's fist balled up tightly as she was ready to take on who ever her sister pointed her finger at.

…tell her that The Doc got a hold of you, she found you in the city and beat you bloody…
I shook my head slightly to clean out all the bad thoughts…as best I could. “I was stupid…I thought I could run the streets like you. I took a nasty tumble.” I pretended to check myself out, then dusted myself off. “I’ll beat you yet…as soon as I figure out how to run with two left feet.”
I knew that my lie was not even a particularly good one…but I had no desire to give my sister anything to worry about when she had plenty of worries of her own. To be honest…if I had told her what I had done…I’m not sure that I could explain to her why I had done it…
…liar…
It was better that I kept this to myself. Besides…it would be the last time that I did something like that…
Nyako's fist relaxed a bit as she eyed her sister suspiciously. She wasn't buy a word she said. Oni had always been a liar and Nyako shouldn't have expected it to change now despite Oni telling her she was trying to be a better person and change her ways.
Still in the back of Nyako's mind this didn't seem like the lies Oni usually told, the ones that were said to get others in trouble, or do her work, or even to watch chaos ensue for her own enjoyment., No this time it felt like she was trying to protect Nyako and also was a bit ashamed to tell the truth.
Nyako wasn't sure how to react to this. She could push the issue but thought better of it, as much as she wanted her sister to feel comfortable confiding in her since she was trying to be a new person, she wouldn't force her too.
"Maybe you should try walking first to get to know the area." She said trying to diffuse the mood. "It took me awhile to get used to here. Can't imagine you would know the lay of the land in just a little over a week."
Nyako continued to Eye her sister, wishing she would give her some sign, a sign of anything just to know if she was making the right call to let it go.
"You need me to help you clean up your scratches and scrapes?" Seeing if Oni would at least take her up on this offer of help.

…Ooooooooh, so cute…YES PLEASE…
I struggle mightily against the idea, but sometimes the demon inside me wins out. After a moment, I nod my head and give a slight shrug of my shoulders, at least trying to give the appearance of being noncommittal…
…you wanted this, why do you think you did what you did…
“I was being stupid…I certainly learned my lesson today…” I put on a rye smile as I point at the bag, “…but you know, BBQ! So, it wasn’t all bad.”
I walk over and sit at the table, exposing my injuries to her…
…don’t forget the rest, the ones along your side are glorious…imagine her cleaning them...especially near the naughty bits...
I tuck my elbow in to shield my ribs and side, knowing that those would be more difficult to explain away…
…but OH so much more fun to share…
I stifle down the voice inside my head and commence to make small talk to distract her from seeing me holding myself while she gathers her cleaning supplies. “So…you ready for your match…? I know that you are, but I can come with you…just to be sure about things.”
…I don’t think you want to be getting to close too a shrink…not after the last one you saw…they can smell crazy on you, like flies buzzing around an outhouse…
Nyako put down the supplies on the table next to Oni as she examined her once again. She notice Oni trying hard to cover up her sides, hiding the bruises she had thier, probably ashamed to show them to her.
This was not the sister Nyako used to know. She was nonabrasive, coy, even thoughtful. Qualities she did not think ONi possessed. This made her think she mis judged her sister all these years and she might have been the one who drove a wedge between them and not Oni.
"Where would you like me to start? Your face is pretty scratched up. You side though..." Nyako said, eluding to the area Oni was trying hard to hide."

I flinched when she mentioned my side. It stung as if she had touched me. Was I so obvious…?
…you want her to see you like this…
I shake my head, despite my inner monolog. “No…I’m fine…” Though even as I say the words…I scream inside. I swallow it all back down, and do my best to change the subject.
“Are you concerned about your match tomorrow?” I ask, “You know that I’ll be there to make sure that everything is okay.”
Nyako decided not to press the issue as her sister seemed to not want to talk about her injuries. Nyako took her cue and started to work on her sister's cheek and clean away the blood and try to sterile the scratch.
"You don't have to Kymiku. Like I said before. I'm a big girl I can take care of myself. I've been doing it for most of my life." She said absentmindedly.
Realizing the comment she just made she regretted letting the words slip out of her mouth. She really didn't want Oni to feel like she abandoned her. She actually knew why she left all those years ago even if she didn't like it. Plus it wasn't Oni's fault that their mother got sick and Nyako had to fend for both her and her mother before she passed. No that blamed lied at the feet of their father.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean it that way. I just meant you already have your hands full with that foul mouthed cipal, Grey. No need to concern yourself with me. I think I can handle Doc." She said as she turned Oni's face to work on her other side.
Nyako hoped here words smoothed over her initial statement so Oni didn't feel unwanted. She was trying hard to believe her sister's intentions but it still wasn't easy to go along with Oni's change of heart. It was till a bit jarring and Nyako was still waiting for the other shoe to drop.

I was initially hurt by Nyako’s words, but she quickly add a slight balm to make it easier to swallow…more or less. I understood the way my sister thought…the way she acted. It wasn’t so different than the way our father had been…
…if you told her that, she would break your neck…
I nodded, “I know that you’ll handle your business inside the ring, my concern isn’t The Doc…it’s Crystal Hilton. Grey told me that she had it in for her as well as you. I have no plans in leaving you alone…not watching your back.”
Nyako stood back from her sister with the blood guaze still in her hand. She cocked a eyebrow at her sister.
"You really believed Grey when she said Crystal was Gunning for me?"
Nyako could see that Oni thought because of her past issues with Hilton, Crystal would want to take revenge on her through her sister. But honestly Nyako didn't think Crystal was that deep or even smart to think of hatching a plan like that. But even if she had half a brain, Hilton had to remember in their days in 3WL Nyako and Oni didn't exactly get along.
"Kymiku, don't buy into her BS. She just wants you to take Hilton out for her. She knows the problems you two had in the past and using them to her advantage. I'm just the carrot she's dangling in front of you to motivate you to react."
Nyako was trying to not patronize Oni cause she knew Oni possibly could put it together for herself but maybe she was blinded in making amends with her that she bought into Grey's crap.
"I'm not going to stop you from coming down to my match. But do it cause you want to enjoy a good match, not because you feel you need to be my guardian little sister."

…stubborn, like our father…
That was okay, Nyako may not have believed it…and while I might have been skeptical…I wasn’t going to take a chance and be wrong. I knew better than to tell her that.
“Yeah…maybe you’re right.” I answered, “I’ll just watch the match…” I smiled, “…maybe I’ll learn how to walk on two feet…just like a real girl!” I batted my eyelashes at her to illustrate the joke.
When she favored me with the slightest hint of a smile, I burst out laughing and she soon followed suit. For a moment…I felt good and I didn’t need pain to distract me from the violence that dwelled just below the surface. My demons were under control…at least for the moment…
…once Hilton showed her face, all bets would be off and she would bleed for me, I wouldn’t be held in check forever…
