Featuring Alex Yin

March 2015
The fans cheered and whistled as Trisha VanReardon walked out on stage, looking fantastic, as she usually did. “Good evening everyone…and welcome to ‘The Hot Seat!’ This episode is going to be very different because my guest is very different.”
Trisha walked over to the ominous black chair and put her hands on it. “My guest today has carved out a nitch for herself in LAW that has made her a fan favorite with young and old alike. This woman came within a whisper of being in the mainevent of Rising Stars…but tonight she will go one on one with me…” she patted the chair, “…the Hot Seat!!”
More cheers errupted as she gestured, “Please welcome…ALEX YIN!!!”
Alex happily skips from backstage, holding Chewie in her hands. As she walks past the cheering crowd, mshe raises her pet chinchilla who gets an even louder reception. She then sits down on the chair and grins cheerfully.
Alex: Hiya, Trisha!
She then turns her chair and waves to the audience.
Alex: Hi, guys!
Alex keeps smiling as she spins around in the chair before slowing to a giddy stop.

Trisha arched her eyebrow at Alex, “Some would venture to say that you are a bit dizzy all the time, sweetie!” The crowd groaned at Trisha’s rather mean spirited response, but she ignored them as she moved to her seat, crossing her legs as she eyed the British star.
“Alex, I think you know how this goes…but just in case you were still dizzy from your trip; I am going to ask you five questions…none of them easy.” She smiled, deviously, “Please try not to freeze up like Crystal Hilton and Nicky Silver…it made for a really boring show…and I am not in the business of doing boring, got it?!”

Trisha was unnerved by the girl’s bubbly personality. No one was that happy all the time…no one sane or free from chemical dependency. Trisha sat forward, intent on peeling back this onion and seeing into which category she fit.
“Okay Alex…lets start things off with this; since your arrival in LAW you have made good accounting of yourself inside the ring. You nearly defeated Oni to move on to the finals of the LAW Championship tournament, but you fell short. Despite your good showing, does it bother you that no one takes you seriously in LAW?” Trisha smirked, “I mean…you always have a smile on your face and a positive outlook…but that isn’t going to get you anywhere when you see that all of the women who have been successful in LAW have not been…DORKS!”
Alex enclosed her arms around Chewie and brushed aside her hair. She thought for a moment and then smiled.
Alex: Well, the way I see it, people do take me seriously. I had the opportunity to be champ and that was cool. If my opponents don't think I'm up to it then great. If they underestimate me, that gives me the edge. And as for none of the previous champions being "dorks", well I guess I could be the first!
Alex smiles again and giggles, partly just to unnerve Trisha who Alex knew was something of a bully.
Alex: Hey, these questions are kind of cool! Making me seem like a badass!

“A bad ass…holding a chinchilla? I hardly see the connection my dear, but don’t worry…the questions always get better.” Trisha smiled back at Alex and even glanced down at Chewie, giving the furry little critter a wink.
“I will give you this…despite the fact that LAW thought so little of you that no one could get your name right at the beginning, you did stay the course with your head held high. A great many people admire your pride and loyalty…even though you are somewhat of an anomaly in LAW.” Trisha smiled and gave chuckle, “You’re from England…a country that you very proudly represent…a country that is represented by many very notable figures in LAW. Adding your name to that list is surely a since of pride for you, but I have to wonder…does it bother you that you’re viewed first and foremost as an Asian who has sold out, rather than one who embraces who she really is…like Nyako and Oni…your supposed friends in the United Sisters of Asia?”
Alex: You're asking why I don't wear my cultural background on my sleeve?
Alex once again takes a moment to think.
Alex: Both of my parents are English, for a start. My grandparents are from China, all but my Grandma Mei are from Hong Kong which was British territory for a long time. I am proud of my roots, but my roots are more than just sone far-flung part of the world. It's not like I need a gong sounding everytime I walk out. I'm hopeless with chopsticks. I do have a Panda thing I sleep in sometimes. Got a lot of retweets from that.
Alex remained cheery and civil even though she could feel Van Reardon's questioning start to bite a little. It was then that Alex thought of a nice little shot retalliation.
Alex: Van Reardon...that sounds Dutch. Sorry, I'm not certain. You've never mentioned it before.

Trisha gave Alex a callous smile. “You’re in the Hot Seat sweet pee, not me…I’ll ask the questions…mate!” She crossed her legs as she considered Alex’s response to her last question.
“First, let me say that I appreciate your honesty. It’s not everyone that can so easily come out and actually tell the world that they don’t care to acknowledge or embrace their heritage.” She paused, watching Alex’s reaction to her statement. When Alex started to chime in, Trisha cut her off. “Your answer to my last question does give me quite a bit of insight into your interaction with USA, but it does lead me to my next question…”
A devious gleam twinkled in her eye, “Is that the reason that you haven’t joined USA? Is it because you resent the way they ‘wear their culture on their sleeves…’ as you say, representing their backwards traditions from some ‘far-flung part of the world?’ You feel superior to them…obviously.”
Alex: Seriously? This is what you're going for? Okay...
Alex sits back, surprisingly confident.
Alex: First of all, for an interviewer, you're really bad at listening. I do acknowledge my heritage, but I am who I am. I didn't grow up in China, I've only been to Hong Kong twice in my life. I lived for a year of my life in Japan, I've lived in America for a while. I'm the result of many different parts of my life. I'm sorry that I don't fit your preconceptions of who someone of Chinese heritage should be. Nyako and Oni had a very different life to me and that shaped who they are.
Alex then leans forwards.
Alex: As far as USA are concerned I'm...semi-official. A "half-sister" I guess. That's just how I like things. Nyako and Oni have shown me every courtesy in this company so why would I resent them? To be honest, I don't resent anyone at the moment, all is cool with me. Even you, Trisha. You may be a little bit...stand-offish...but at least you're entertaining.

Trisha gave Alex a consolatory look and a tiny smile. “Uhhhh…that is sweet! Maybe…when we are done here, I’ll let you take me out for a drink.” She chuckled, then moved on.
“I’m glad that you elaborated on your relationship with USA, since that leads me right into my next question. It is great that you see yourself as a semi-member, but if that is the case and you are such a great friend to the two of them…don’t you think your actions contradict that?”
She observed Alex’s curious expression and she gleefully continued, “Oni and Nyako have been great supporters of you and they have shown great concern for your well being, despite what they have going on in their own personal lives. Over the last few weeks, your ‘so-called’ sisters have endured all manner of verbal and physical attacks directed at them from the likes of Mackenzie Roberts and her new friends. If I am not mistaken, you are also friends with Mackenzie.”
Trisha shook her head, “Arguably, you are in a position where you can say or do something about Mackenzie’s actions…but you don’t. So my real question is this, what kind of a friend are you to Nyako and Oni, when they have bent over backwards to support you and you have repeatedly chosen Mackenzie over them, time and time again for a woman who refuses to be even half the friend to you that your sisters have been?”
Alex: Look, the whole situation between Mackenzie, Oni, Nyako and myself is really complicated. When Mackenzie took it upon herself to do those things I was angry. Really angry. I've screamed and shouted at her all I can. I'm not going to fight her, at least not outside of a sanctioned match, not because I'm a coward and not because I agree with her but because...and this is going to sound really dumb...I'm a pacifist. I can't hurt her and I won't hurt her.
Alex rubs her eyes for a moment.
Alex: Look, if Mackenzie and her gang get involved and then I get involved, things are going to build. She'll bring in more people, we'll bring in more people and it'll be chaos. All I want is a diplomatic solution to all of this and slowly, I think it's working.
Alex shrugs.
Alex: I know that's not exactly a tough answer, but it's an honest one. Violence begats violence.

“A pacifist in a combat sport…” Trisha remarked, her voice dripping in sarcasm. “You’re right…it sounds really dumb, but you know what…” She leaned forward, looking around as she did, as if to make sure that she wasn’t overheard, “People thought that Albert Einstein was retarded…it just goes to show you that sometimes, stupid people don’t understand real genius, huh?”
Trisha sat back in her seat, eyeing Alex with a devilish grin. “Last question…I can’t say for certain what is going on between you and Mackenzie Roberts, but judging from that last answer…I’d say that there’s something that’s keeping you interested.” She laced her fingers, eyeing Alex carefully. “You don’t have to answer this question out loud…if you don’t want to, but you should ask this question to yourself; seeing as how you care so much about Mackenzie that you’re willing to sit back and watch her destroy your friends…what is she giving up…when she can only tell everyone who will listen that she doesn’t give a shit about you?”
Trisha shrugged, “Like I said…you don’t have to answer that last one…”
Alex: Because Mackenzie does care. People don't realise that she's a really complicated person and people only see what she shows them. Deep down, she's sweet and caring and loving, but she's just afraid she'll get hurt. I'm by her side and I'll stay there and one day she'll come to trust people and things will get better. I don't know how long that'll take, but it will happen.
Alex smiles once again as she strokes Chewie's fur.

Trisha smiled right back at Alex, as she recognized how the girl ignored the jab concerning Mackenzie going after her friends…as well as asking herself what ‘The Queen Bitch’ was giving up in return. “Wonderfully telling my dear…not that it answered my question…but very insightful, all the same.” Trisha stood as she began to clap, spurring the audience to do the same. “Give it up to my guest everyone…she was a tremendously good sport tonight!”
Trisha invited Alex to stand as the crowd continued to clap and cheer. “Be sure to join us again next time, as someone new faces off with me…in the Hot Seat!”
