Kenzi held Alex’s hand as the painkillers that the doctor had prescribed kicked in. The two girls shared some quiet conversation that finally lulled into the two of them just watching one another until Alex peacefully drifted off to sleep. Kenzi sat there holding her hand for another half hour before she finally reluctantly let her hand go and quietly backed out of the room.
As she pulled the door shut, Hannah walked up behind her, putting a hand on her shoulder. “How’s she doing?”
Kenzi shrugged, “Better…finally sleeping.”
Hannah handed Kenzi her phone, “Here, that psychopath that attacked her has been blowing up your Twitter while you were in there.
Kenzi snatched up her phone and narrowed her eyes as she saw Phage’s attempts to intimidate her. Though the woman was legitimately scary, Kenzi had no intention of being afraid or backed down by her or anyone else for that matter. She might not have inherited her mother’s natural wrestling ability, but she did have her quick wit and sharp tongue. She smiled gleefully as she pounded out a snappy response and sent it, whispering to herself under her breath, “Take that hoebag!”
Hannah frowned, “Are you sure you want to be doing that? I mean…that chick looks really scary…”
Kenzi looked at Hannah and then back at the closed door, behind which her friend lay convalescing. Kenzi sighed with a shake of her head, as she looked back at Hannah. “No…I don’t want to be doing any of this at all…but I have no choice in the matter! That masked faced piece of shit laid hands on my…my friend…and I won’t stand back and let that shit slide!” Despite the fear inside her, the anger she felt at Violet for abandoning her fueled and emboldened her. “I don’t walk out on my friends…EVER!” Kenzi walked past Hannah as she grabbed an apple from the table and bit into it, chewing as she added, “I thought that Jenn Drew was like me and Al…I thought she was about us being tight, but she showed her true fucking colors, just like Violet! She’s a fucking user and a goddamn coward! I’m glad DoA is over and DONE! One more failed venture for Vi and one bullet dodged for me!”
Hannah watched Kenzi with concern in her eyes. She hadn’t known the girl for very long, but she could clearly see that she was hurting inside. She walked over and sat down beside Kenzi. “You think that maybe you are being too hard on Vi? I mean…she was sick and now there’s a baby to think about. You know that stuff messes with your head.”
Kenzi glared at Hannah, “She has made it her mission in life to mess with people’s heads…that’s all she fucking does! FUCK HER!! After what she did?! I hope she dies in a fiery car crash into a truckload of AIDS victims!”
Hannah sighed, knowing that Kenzi was just venting. Perhaps, in time she would see that Violet was only doing what she had to do. Of course, the fact that she never bothered to face the girls she had brought together was pretty shitty, but shitty was par for the course with her. She decided to change the topic of discussion back to Phage. “Are you thinking that Oni will help with this…crazy chick that Jenn has with her?”
Kenzi shrugged, “I don’t even know. I think Oni might be pissed at me for blowing off our training sessions last week…but I was too pissed at Vi. I mean…how was I supposed to keep my focus on Gabby when I couldn’t even focus on my own life?” Kenzi picked up her phone and scrolled through her timeline and gave a sigh, “Looks like Oni has already gotten pretty fucking chummy with Phage anyway…”
Hannah looked at the messages between the two. “Well…you have to admit…they do seem to enjoy the same things.” Hannah shivered, “The fascination with blood is a little creepy…”
Kenzi rolled her eyes at the picture of Phage taking a ‘blood bath’ and rolled her eyes as she tossed the phone aside. “I’m hoping that Oni steps in…but…if she doesn’t, I get it…I flaked on her with the Gabby thing. If I’m on my own…I’ll find a way to deal, but no way in hell do I let that bitch run me down on Twitter…and no way in hell do I let her get away with what she did to Alex! She’ll apologize for what she did or she’ll spend the rest of her days in LAW looking over her fucking shoulder!”
Hannah stared at Kenzi, “You really are into this girl, aren’t you?”
Kenzi sighed, shaking her head. “I don’t know what I am. I mean…I care about her…more than I care about myself apparently! She’s a good person…a kind and sweet person, Han! She’d never hurt a fly! That drives me fucking crazy…but…it’s great…you know?” Kenzi sat back and stared up at the ceiling, “I don’t know what I feel…I mean…I don’t think I’m a lesbian…but Alex…she does and she says things…I…”
Hannah put her hand on Kenzi’s shoulder, “Hey! Don’t dwell on it…you’ll over think things. If you’re attracted to her and she’s attracted to you…nature will take its course and what happens, happens.”
Kenzi looked nervous as she wrung her hands. “My mother would kill me if she thought I was a lesbian…if that is even what this is! I mean…I’ve never been with anyone…EVER!” She looked around nervously, making sure that they were still alone. She whispered under her breath, “…what if I’m not…what if Alex is just a crush?”
Hannah, “And what if she’s not? How are you ever going to know?”
Kenzi sat there in silence, unsure of her feelings and steeped in utter confusion. Kenzi and Hannah spent the rest of the night talking to one another until the two of them eventually fell asleep on the couch together, exhausted from the long night of serious conversation. The two girls rested against one another, giving the distinct impression of togetherness…though, that was hardly the case, despite what Kenzi had led Alex to believe. When she awoke the next morning and found them, that no doubt reinforced her perception…
