Kenzi and Hannah had spent the entire day together, bonding as they worked to repair their fractured relationship following the revelations that had come after Rising Stars. Alex had found out that Kenzi had torn up the note that had been meant to let Hannah down easy after she decided to be with Kenzi. On top of that, Kenzi had lied to Alex, telling her than Hannah was a drunk who had relapsed. All of these things Kenzi had done in order to hold her relationship with Alex together while keeping Hannah at a distance. When Alex had found out about everything, she had been furious and ready to end things all together, making Kenzi promise to stop lying and promise not to intimidate Hannah. She had agreed to Alex’s demands in order to maintain their relationship…but at that point she would have agreed to almost anything at all…including this day out together.
Things had been awkward on Hannah’s part for the entire day. After learning what Kenzi was capable of, she had been on guard. Hannah knew that she had overstepped the bounds of the relationship by kissing Alex, but Kenzi had crossed the line as well. If she knew Alex, the girl had already confessed about the kiss to Kenzi and the Hollywood starlet was just waiting on the perfect time to spring it on her and throw it in her face. Hannah had been ready for this, but Kenzi had never said a word about it…in fact, she had been extremely pleasant for a change.
They had lunch at an exclusive restaurant, they had spent half the day at the salon being pampered, and Kenzi had taken her on a shopping spree afterwards. Hannah had insisted that Kenzi not buy anything for her, but she continued to pay for anything that Hannah even gave a passing glance at. By the end of the day, the two girls seemed well on their way to being the best of friends yet again. Hannah began to feel bad about everything that had happened between them as she began to think that maybe things between them would be alright.
As the day drew to a close and the two headed back home, Kenzi grew quiet and withdrawn. Hannah braced herself for Kenzi to explode on her out of the blue, even as she asked the question. “What’s wrong Ken?”
Kenzi shook her head, looking out the window as the cab continued on its way through the city. “My Mom…Alex got on me for not going to see her last week. I…I just find it really hard, you know?”
Hannah put her hand on Kenzi’s shoulder. “Why don’t you just go for a few minutes…just to get all that stuff out? You’ll feel better. Heck, I’ll go with you.”
Kenzi protested, but Hannah wouldn’t hear of it. She didn’t have money like Kenzi had, but this was something that she could done. She diverted the cab and had it take them to the assisted care facility where Sidney Grey was being looked after. Kenzi and Alex were led in by a kindly looking nurse who told the two how her mother was doing and about the frequent visits by Alex, who took the time to read to her…despite the fact that she was catatonic.
When they got to her room, Hannah started to stay outside, but Kenzi insisted that she couldn’t see her mother alone. She wasn’t strong enough yet and she needed the support. Hannah agreed to come inside with her and she held Kenzi’s hand as they walked into the room and stood at the foot of Sidney’s bed. The woman sat in the bed, her eyes staring blankly ahead. She didn’t look like the Sidney of old, she looked tired and haggard, her usual luscious dark hair was not a salt and pepper mop.
Hannah felt strange being there with Kenzi as she stared at her mother, but if her friend needed support…it was her place to provide it. Hannah squeezed Kenzi’s hand, “Go ahead…talk to her. She’ll hear you.”
Kenzi looked at Hannah, then slowly turned as she walked over to her mother’s bedside, still holding on tight to Hannah’s hand. She stopped by her mother’s side, staring at her for a moment before she finally spoke, “Mama…I’m here. I-I’m sorry that I don’t come more often…I’m just so busy. That…and seeing you like this…it…it…”
Hannah gave Kenzi’s hand a squeeze, urging her to say what was in her heart. “Just let it out…”
Kenzi looked a Hannah and then turned back to Sidney, “Seeing you like this…it…it makes me so…happy…”
Hannah froze as she stared at Kenzi, wondering if the girl had misspoke, even as she continued on.
“You were a terrible parent…the worst one imaginable.” She paused for a moment, “Well…except for Keira Fisher…I imagine that her kid is going to grow up to be a fucking serial killer…but at least we can all just hope that Keira will be that little shit’s first victim!” Kenzi chuckled, sitting down on the edge of the bed, as she still held on to Hannah’s hand. “Mama, for the first time since you’ve been laid up in here...I’m having regrets…regrets over what happened to you…you getting rundown like you did. You being in here…just staring…without a television where you can see me become a bigger star than you ever were. I just want to rub it in your face…just to know that your jealous ass couldn’t do a damn thing about it!”
Hannah tried to pull away, “Maybe I should wait outside…”
Kenzi held on tight, yanking Hannah back to her side. She continued to talk, even though she never acknowledged Hannah even once. “A bad of a parent as you were…I learned a lot from you Mama…I learned that sometimes if you want something, you have to be willing to do anything it takes to get it. I learned that sometimes if you want to keep that thing…” she squeezed Hannah’s hand tighter, “…you have to be willing to hurt the person who wants to take that thing from you! That’s the lesson that you taught me Mama…and for that…that one thing…I thank you.”
Hannah pulled and finally yanked her hand free from Kenzi as she stumbled back. “ARE YOU THREATENING ME?!”
Kenzi seemed confused and taken aback by the accusation. “Huh?! What…what are you talking about?”
Hannah stared at Kenzi, pointing an accusatory finger at her. “What was all that stuff about being willing to hurt someone wanting to take something from you?! What was that all about?!”
Kenzi stood up, looking at Hannah suspiciously, “Hannah…is there something that you want to tell me?”
Hannah didn’t like Kenzi playing games with her, not like this. “You’ve been messing with my head all day! You knew that I kissed Alex…DIDN’T YOU!! You’ve been playing innocent all day…trying to get me off guard!”
Kenzi grabbed her chest as a look her hurt colored her features, “Hannah…how…how could you?! Why would you betray me like that?!”
Hannah shook her head, “FUCK YOU KENZI! I’m not falling for your games!”
Kenzi’s face hardened, “Games? Does this look like a game to you?” She turned and looked at her mother, still staring off into nothingness. She turned back to Hannah. “My mother played games with me my entire life…but now that’s all over and done with. I’m finally happy…but now…you’re the one who’s trying to step in and fuck it all up! I’m not having it Hannah…I WON’T!”
Hannah narrowed her eyes, “You think Alex won’t leave you high and fucking dry after I tell her what you did?” Hannah smirked, “Enjoy being by yourself Kenzi Grey! Alex is going to hear all about this!” Hannah turned to storm out.
Kenzi called after her, “Make sure you tell her everything…if you don’t, I will…”
Hannah paused at the door, not bothering to turn and look back as she stood there. When she spoke, her voice was small and fragile, “…fuck you Kenzi...”
Kenzi sat down beside her comatose mother, “Utter one word against me to Alex and we’ll see who ends up fucked!” Kenzi didn’t bother to look in Hannah’s direction, she just waited for the girl to walk out and close the door behind her. Kenzi took her mother’s cold hand up in her own and kissed it. “Thanks…”
The scene faded…
