Match day
Waking up was not easy today for the woman we know as Chacalita, it was a day she had waited ever since hearing who she would face at Queen Of The Ring 2016, yet at the same time, anxiety creeped in. The ever confident feeling that usually was constantly present within her soul seemed to be a bit off today. Sitting up on her bed she saw the sun rising, just like every day before this one, a gentle breath of wind came in from the open balcony door, moving the blinds a little. It was a hotel room just like every other one, bed was just like any other bed and yet something felt different.
Standing up, she walked to the dresser, looked in the mirror and saw her own face, everything seemed alright, she had not been drinking or smoking or anything. Every day leading up to this one was full of focus, training and recuperating. She needed to keep her mind, body and soul clear for this one, the toughest defense of them all and yet..it felt different.
“You do know that everyone loses at some point of their career, don’t you?” that familiar voice she had not heard in a good while, the only voice to ever doubt her. It was Mama.
She can’t be here, she is dead, Valeria said she is dead, dead people don’t talk to the living Chacalita, get your head on right, this is not the right time for this.
“You can’t silence me mija, I am your mother! I never wanted this life for you and yet you insisted on abandoning me, your father, even that little sister of yours, la familia..the only family you ever had was pushed aside because you wanted to leave, leave us all behind and go around the world dressed like a slut and mock fighting against other little sluts craving for fame?”
Shut up you jealous old puta! You are just angry that someone actually went after their dream and chased it. Not everyone has to be like you were, stuck in the ways of the old and times of the past. I have done good, I am the Breakout Champion, I am undefeated and I am important to the company I work for!
She felt her blood rushing, almost boiling in her veins, anger tensed her body up as she grabbed hold of her championship belt that was there on the dresser, shined up and ready, clinging to it for safety almost like it was one of those charms old women in the barrio carried around to defend them from the spirits that looked for a chance to lead us to our ruin.
“Are you? Who cares about what you have accomplished? Your purpose is to sit on your culo and wait for a purpose. One tournament after another someone new gets a chance at you. The same company pushes forward women with personal grudges, for putas that post scandalous pictures of themselves and cater to the perros of the opposite sex, is that really something to strive for? Every dog needs a bitch but not every bitch will ever be a queen mija, and you..you are obviously not a queen.”
She white knuckled the championship, pressing it to her chest, biting on her lip.
That’s not true, we got great, talented wrestlers on the roster who respect me for my accomplishments, I beat the top champion. The best one of them all. I beat her Mama, not just anyone can do that!
“Did she thank you for that? Did she come to you and congratulate you on a good job? Be honest mija, she and everyone else see you as a joke, you are a lower tier champion and have only been one this long because none of the other hussies truly wanted to beat you, they never stood a chance because they were too focused on other things, their implants, their dirty puta girlfriends or some other nonsense, but all that may change today, with this slanty eyed little chink..”
Orchid, she must have meant Orchid. The only opponent who had ever given her any respect since her debut in Ladies All star Wrestling. The one who was so alike with her when it came to pride, honesty and hard work, yet she wanted to beat her, for her championship.
“See mija? That talk of hers how she respects you, how you are so alike. She’s smarter than the others, she knows that if she comes at you with insults and loses, she looks like a joke. Like a damn idiota, but if she lures you into believing you are alike, like sisters of different continents and beats you in your own game. She’ll be respected and seen as a professional and even if she loses, you won’t ride her too hard because she was nice to you..women are beasts mija, especially to each other. You think that Jackal is some spirit animal of yours or something. It does fit your style skulking about in the dark looking for a carcass. I raised you better than that, but that husband of mine, your sad excuse of a father, he filled your head with dreams that your mind would never last through..”
Thought of her father brought tears into the eyes of the champion, thinking back how much Papi had always told both of his daughters to be proud of their accomplishments, to let nobody or nothing hold them back from them and just because you think you can’t be perfect stop you from doing your best. That is what she has done every single day since coming to LAW, going up against every challenger like her life depended on it and no matter what happened in the match between her and Orchid would not make her regret going after this dream, for spending all the time training and going from show to show just to prove that she could go with anyone and everyone in the back. Sure the management might not have given her a consistent run against anyone, her opponents changed up a lot but not once had she complained, she had made no excuses or held back no matter who stood opposite her in the ring and that would not change today.
Orchid might have been the best damn opponent she had ever met, she might be honest and truthful in her words or it may be a trap. Regardless of that Chacalita wanted to believe that this would be her best match yet. That finally she had met a woman on the roster who understood her, who would be able to help them both to climb to new heights in the company. Fact was that not everyone saw the Breakout Championship as big of a deal as they did, but together, her and Orchid would change that shit up tonight, if it required, blood, bruises, broken bones..so be it. It’s not like they were the type to post pictures on twitter anyway.
That made the champion smile, she looked in the mirror on top of the dresser, her dark hair a mess, standing there in her underwear and suddenly, the doubt, the eerie chill that held her in it’s grip before seemed to move over and a gentle desert wind from the Las Vegas desert blew in, flinging the blinds around and she knew he was there with her.
..papi, you still believe in me, right? No matter how things go today. I will make you proud of me. You raised me right and I’ll do everything I can out there in the ring and I know that whatever happens, you will be watching over me from up there, guiding me, comforting me if needed.
She held the championship up towards the heavens and blew a little kiss, laughing at how silly she would have looked if anyone saw her and at the same time. Happy and safe that she would never be alone, Valeria would be there for her, just like Papi..her real familia the ones who saw her as a champion before she had any belt.
Looking in the mirror she spoke up to no one in particular.
“I hope you are ready Orchid, because there is not a jackpot bigger in Vegas than the Breakout Championship and I am going to call your hand, we’ll see who takes the pot tonight.”
Putting down the championship she decided it was a perfect time for a shower before last training of the day.
