A schoolyard playground centred in a remote part of Japan. Several school children are playing about, giggling while tossing a ball or just chasing after one another. None of them really noticing, or just not wanting to notice, the small crowd gathered around the side of the school where a young boy is shoved against the wall by a tough acting kid and his cronies.
Bully: (I said hand it over.)
Boy: (It's not yours to take. Just leave me alone.)
Crony: (He looks like he's about to cry.)
Bully: (Just hand it over!)
The bully demands grabbing for the child's backpack. However, the boy turns inward toward the school clutching the bag to his chest. This, unfortunately, leaves his side exposed for a sharp hitting fist shot, and then another.
Bully: (Hand it over!)
He demands again punching the now whimpering boy just where his kidney is.
Girl: (Leave him alone!)
The sharp call takes the attention of the three as a young girl storms up to the group allowing the victim to squirm his way free and rush away to safer grounds. Particularly those around the monitoring teacher.
Bully: (You let him get away.)
Girl: (Good. You know, everyone in this school is sick and tired of you. Why don't you just go away?)
Bully: (Because it's fun picking on you.)
The bully rears back before sending a fast shot forward. It's caught, however, as the girl twists the boys arm flipping him over and crashing him down on his back. As he cries out, the girl looks to the two cronies who, finding the odds no longer in their favor, quickly run off as the teacher comes rushing in.
Teacher: Mitzusaka!
Back to the present where Etsuko shoots up in her cot breathing heavily. After her third breath, she brings up a hand touching it to the side of her head and checks her fingers to see the sweat that's built up along her brow. Clenching the same hand, Etsuko flips the blanket from her legs and hurries off into the back room of the Red Gym where Nikki sits sipping some tea.
Etsuko: Miss. Nikki,
She begins taking the attention from her retainer. Etsuko gives a few more deep breaths then swallows as she makes her way into the room where she kneels next to the blond.
Etsuko: I...I require another cleansing.
Nikki eyes down at the young joshi considering things for a moment...then nods.
Following the cleansing, both girls now sit up at the table with a cup of tea each resting down in front of them. Etsuko, her head lowered, keeps her hands close to her cup as Nikki rests back against her chair watching her charge before speaking.
Nikki: This is your third cleansing since the match was announced. Does the thought of freedom seem so tempting?
Etsuko: I am free, Miss. Nikki. I am free to realize the vision of our Goddess.
Nikki: That's not what your subconscious is telling us.
Etsuko has no response to that allowing Nikki to pick up her cup in the silence and bring it close.
Nikki: When we found you, you were a wild, savage beast who only made a living carving up pretty faces of pretty girls. Is that truly the life you wish to return to?
Etsuko: No, Miss. Nikki.
She replies promptly as Nikki finishes up a small sip of her tea then just holds the cup a few seconds prior to returning it back down in the preset groove in the saucer.
Nikki: We've yet to talk about your match with Ashley.
Etsuko: I apologized profusely to the Red Lady for my actions, Miss. Nikki.
Nikki: True. But we've yet to talk about it. Remember, the Goddess only cares for her vision being seen, it's the retainers who make certain you don't slip up along the way. Your victory over Ashley was a accepted sacrifice for the Red Lady, but what came next...
Etsuko nods licking her lips a little all while keeping her head lowered.
Etsuko: It was a mistake, Miss. Nikki.
Nikki: It was a sign, Etsuko.
Not expecting that, Etsuko looks up slowly from her end of the table toward her retainer.
Nikki: Ever since we set foot in this company you've been attempting your best at proving the dominance of our Goddess.
Etsuko nods finding no lie in those words.
Nikki: You've tried so hard giving so many the chance for a greater life. Every single one of them, however, has chosen to end things rather then change them for the better. It's my belief you've created some form of frustration of this resenting those in the ring.
It makes enough sense to Etsuko who again lowers her head out of both consideration and shame.
Nikki: You've even begun questioning the faith.
Etsuko: No!
Etsuko retorts shooting her head back up.
Etsuko: Never! Miss. Nikki, I am nothing without the Red Lady in my life. I would never question any of the gifts given!
Nikki: Then stop thinking of a different path.
She says in effort to calm the joshi down. Her tone sharp enough to demand silence from Etsuko in any situation.
Nikki: They will come, and if they don't you'll still force your way through them. Maria will just become the next in your long line of examples. Defeat her and bring her to the feet of the Red Lady. Make her become your echo.
Nikki orders.
Etsuko: Yes, Miss. Nikki.
Once more, Etsuko bows her head as Nikki rises from her seat taking both cup and saucer along with her as she departs the room.
The next morning, inside the ring of the Red Gym, Etsuko stands with arms folded.
Etsuko: Miss. Maria, I will say this one time and you will understand. Your past does not frighten me. Not because of what you have done or what those around you are capable of, but because by this time next week your past will be the hollow images of a dead child. You will be baptized, reborn under a new image. An image you will learn to become grateful of as you are shown a better road in life.
The last time I spoke to you, I offered you a chance to simply accept the inevitable. To proudly proclaim yourself immortal. Yet you, like so many others, have decided you can manage things on your own.
There is a disease running through the roster, Miss. Maria, and it begins to manifest when the Red Lady puts her eyes to you. It is a disease called Red Syndrome and there is no cure. Just ask the forgotten, those who felt the gaze upon them and saw my offered hand only to refuse. When the Red Lady's eyes turn away as a result of blatant stupidity, that is when the disease strikes. It is not a sickness of body or mind, but the soul. A sickness that cannot be cured no matter what you offer it. Because it is a sickness that attacks the very will of a person's spirit and sooner or later...you just give in.
You accept that you have no place in this world.
You accept you have no place in the ring.
You accept you have no place in life.
You not only depart this plane, but those around forget your very existence. So to deny the Red Lady's gift is to accept the very notion of death beyond death.
Right now, Miss. Maria, Her eyes are on you. Do you feel their warmth? Do you feel their acceptance? I...I do. I feel it daily. I feel it every second of my waking life. My will is Hers. My mind is Hers. My body is Hers! And I will proudly give every bit of that to show you the better path!
Miss. Maria, the olive branch has been pushed aside by your hand, but the gaze is still upon you. You will see a better life, you will accept a better life, you will live and find comfort in the shadow of our Goddess.
