Oni's Apartment
New York City, New York
7 March 2015
I tested the strength in my left leg, then frowned as I felt it give a little too much than what I was comfortable with. I sat down hard, staring at the Ace bandage that had suddenly become my constant companion in recent days. Mackenzie Roberts had done a number on my leg at Rising Stars, and though I had emerged as the winner, I didn’t feel like one at the moment…despite the fact that the LAW Title was now in my possession.
A knock at my door gave rise to a bitter taste in my mouth, not that I didn’t want visitors, but I knew the walk to the door was going to be long and painful. I made my way over and spied SoLo through the peephole. “Well now, if it isn’t CTN’s latest pinup girl?” I said sarcastically.
SoLo smirked, “Don’t act like you were wearing much more than I was! I saw you on the cover!”
I rolled my eyes, standing aside to let her in. “I was contractually obligated to take the picture…not that you didn’t know that already, seeing as how you are my Business Manager.” As she walked inside, I closed the door behind her, “Speaking of which…what brings you here? Signing me up for LAW 24?”
SoLo stopped and turned, “You mean 23…don’t you?” She glanced around at my rather lived in conditions. “Did you start packing for Texas yet? We need to be there by Sunday morning!”
I narrowed my eyes at her, unsure of what she was talking about. “Song…my leg is jacked up! There is no way that I am going to go to Houston like this!”
Her mouth fell open in a mixture of shock and surprise. “Oni…you have to go! You’re the LAW Champion!! You need to show those women that you’re the top of the food chain!” She glanced around, “Speaking of which…where is it? Where is the belt?!”
I gestured towards the closet, as I plopped down and put an icepack back on my leg. “Lucas didn’t book me because he knows I need the time to heal…why are you not seeing that?!”
SoLo ignored me as she rummaged through my closet and found the belt, haphazardly stuffed in the bag I had left it in after the photo shoot. She pulled it out and whirled on me, her face flushed with anger. “ONI! Are you insane?! You need to go to LAW 23 and you need to represent USA as the new champion!! I told everyone that you were coming and that you wou…”
My cutting glare silenced her, “You did…WHAT?!”
SoLo swallowed hard…as she wrapped her arms around herself protectively, as she usually did when she was afraid. After a moment, she dropped her arms and straightened, meeting my gaze with more fire than I knew she possessed. “You’re the goddamn Champion now! You have to be out front…you have to get your face out there for EVERY show and lead the company! You have to let anyone who wants a shot at your belt know that you’re the measuring stick now and if they want to be where you are…they have to find a way to be better than you!” Her eyes became hard, “Then you show them that they can’t!”
…check out the balls on Skinny Minnie; showing her tits and ass in that CTN rag and now she is telling you how to be a champion, the little shit is starting to grow on me…
The change was subtle, but apparent…I didn’t care for it as much as my inner self, but that was of little surprise or consequence. “Song, I appreciate the fact that you are really pushing this thing forward…and maybe you are right about me leading the way in LAW, but this…” I pointed to my leg, “…is serious and needs a bit of attention…just for one show…that is all I ask.”
SoLo’s shoulders dropped as she looked at me like a traitor. “Oni…I told everyone that you would be there. I’ll look like an idiot!”
Though it pained me, I got up and went to her, putting my hand on her shoulder. “Song…trust me when I tell you this, that place is going to be a feeding frenzy on Sunday. I’d love nothing more than to be there to put everyone in check…but I am not ready…I hav…”
Before I could finish, SoLo shoved the title at me, and I nearly dropped it as she let it go. “FINE! I’ll just go with Nyako! Stay here and…do whatever it is you do!”
“SONG!”
She was gone before I could say another word, slamming the door behind her. I stood there, holding the belt and considering what she had said. There was merit in it, but the fact of the matter was that when I walked into LAW with the belt around my waist I wanted to do it proudly, on my own two feet. Not hobbling around like a lame horse that was ready to be put down…
…you’re right on this one, if you go there, showing any weakness…someone is going to take a shot at you; you did the right thing to send the little bitch running out of here with her tail between her legs…
I stood there…staring at the belt in my hands…doing my best to convince myself that I was doing the right thing, but if I was…why did it seem so wrong?
