La Estrella is jumping rope in the gym. She wears her usual mask and all black workout gear. In the background, Rush plays. ‘Spirit of Radio’ has just started and Estrella starts to jump faster and in tune with the beat of the song. A big man comes walks into the gym, into view. Estrella does not see him or even hear him. His huge hand reaches over and turns off the music player. That quickly knocks Estrella out of her zone. The young woman slaps the jump rope against the floor causing a slap to echo through the gym. The big man stares at Estrella.
La Estrella: Oye, qué coño? Revertir esta situación en este momento!
The big man looks at La Estrella. He doesn’t seem impressed or threatened. The man, over six feet tall and full of muscle folds his arms in front of his pushed out chest and smirks as he gives the Mexican wrestling star a good once over, eyeing her up.
Man: What’s with the mask?
La Estrella is angered by this remark. She takes a few steps forward and now stands just inches away from the man. He towers over her but she does not care; she remains utterly unafraid.
La Estrella: Turn the music back on.
The man laughs. He is not impressed by her or even cares about what she said. To add insult to the injury, he flicks the star at the top of her black mask.
Man: What’s behind there? You hiding scars? Going all Doctor Doom or some shit.
La Estrella: Idiota. Esta es la máscara de una leyenda en la fabricación. Toma un poco de respeto.
Man: I don’t speak Spanish.
La Estrella tilts her head to side unsure of what to do next.
La Estrella: This mask is honor. Pride. My family. My father wore one. My father’s father wore one. The great warriors of the culture wore these and they steal wear these. It is something someone as stupido as you could not understand.
The man tightens his brown and nods sarcastically.
Man: Do they also listen to shitty music?
La Estrella pushes her finger against her lips and nods sarcastically in response.
La Estrella: Are all Americans as ugly and stupid as you? Se mira un perro.
The Star takes a step back and waves her hand in front of her face as if to clear away a smell.
La Estrella: Hueles a uno, también. Stinky-stinky.
The man takes a few more steps back from Estrella and points an angry finger at her.
Man: I don't know what you said - - but - - but you’re lucky I don’t hit women.
She shrugs.
Man: That’s disappointing because I hit men. So hard they fall down.
The man has nothing to say. He shakes his head and growls. After La Estrella shrugs defiantly, he decides to leave. La Estrella smirks. She does not turn her music back on. Instead, she turns and faces the camera that witnessed the little tiff between the gymrat and La Estrella.
La Estrella: Some Americans are very disrespectful. They have big egos and small penes. They do not understand my culture. They do not understand the mascara. The mask. The star. These are symbols where I drawn my passion from, my patrimonio. English would call it, birthright. Cowards do not hide behind masks, great warriors wear them as a sign of their honor.
La Estrella sits down on a bench and fiddles with her boot.
La Estrella: I am truly a warrior. The fans, mis fans in Mexico already knew that. It was my American fans that needed to see. Ver para creer. They all saw it. I proved that in my very first match her in LAW. I successfully defeated Latoya Hixx. I have won my first match in LAW. Como fue prometido. Hixx did not stand a chance. She thought she did by equivocado. Ellos creen luz brillante de La Estrella. They believe in me. They believe in my dream!
La Estrella holds up her right fist and then presses it against her chest.
La Estrella:My Sueño Americano has started off on the right foot - as Americans say. I have had tasted victory in America. I want to taste more victory in America. I want to see America, the United States, and I want to see it from the view of a winner. I would like to see it from a Champion’s eyes. I want America, the fans in America to see me as acampeón. It will happen. A tiempo. What is that you Americans say, time is on my side.
The Masked Warrior nods her head.
La Estrella It is my destino to become a superstar wrestling in America. All I need is the super, as I am already a shooting star. I am also a luchadora. That is inside me. My papa was a luchadore, my brother one. My grandfather. My great grandfather. Our family is lucha. I cannot deny who I am… I AM LA ESTRELLA!
The man from before peeks his head around the corner to see where the screaming is coming from. He shakes his head and quickly disappears. She does not even see him.
La Estrella I have the blood of many vetusto warriors flowing through my veins going back thousands of years. This sport it is my blood. My genes. It is all I have ever known. In my mama’s belly I saw backstage and waited for my papa. As a baby, I was ringside at my father’s matches. As a young girl I would play in the ring as if it were a sandbox. Before I was twelve, I already could fly. I travelled all over Mexico with lucha shows. Now I want to travel the States.
She lets out a heavy sigh.
La Estrella: But like most padres with their ninas, Papa did not want his only daughter wrestling. Too dangerous, he said. Not for señoras con clase, he said. Meet a nice man, get married, have many babies. He wants me to get away from the dusty beer halls and rude men, have a mejor vida than his. There is no other life I want than this one. I love my papa, but he could not stop me. You cannot stop el apasionamiento, in my el llamado de corazón. My heart beats for this. I live for this. No one can deny me my dream.
That includes my opponents this week in LAW. I must take on two woman at the same time, in a triple threat match. Brittany Williams and a Et-su-koh Mi-tzus-ak-ah. I do not think I said that correctly. I apologize. English is not my native language. That language is not even familiar to me. Me disculpo.
Understand this: I do not and I will not apologize for what I’m going to do to you at Validation. No. Never. Not today. Not tomorrow. Not after. I am going to defeat you. No should ever apologize for defeating their opponents when in battle. I did not apologize to Latoya after I defeated her. What do you think will happen to you?
La Estrella stands.
La Estrella: No olvides, I am a warrior. I do not know what Williams or Etsuko is, but I am a warrior who wants to win. And I will win. Victoria será mía. This is my first LAW Supershow. I am going to win at my first LAW Supershow. I am on my way. For the very first time in my life, I get to see the American South that so many television shows and movies make light of. Those people, of Atlanta, they will get to see me in person. When I go on to victoria, and leave Etsuko and Williams on the mat, those LAW fans will become mi fans. They will be inculcado. They will be starstruck.
She gets closer to the camera.
La Estrella: Brittney Williams, Etsuko Mitzusaka, you will be starstruck and abatido. It’s only upward for me, like a shooting star. I’ve got destino on my side, legends in my blood, and a dream to chase. I climb higher up the ladder. Say what you will. Think what you. A star is on the rise. La estrella en ascenso!
La Estrella moves away from the bench and walks up to a punching bag. She takes on her fighting stance and starts beating up the bag with vicious punches and kicks. The large man from before returns, peeking his head around the corner to see who is hitting the back so hard and so quickly. He finally looks impressed. He leans up against the corner of the door frame, folds his arms in front of his chest, and watches intently. After a spell, he nods his approval at La Estrella’s punching and occasional kicking.
La Estrella: Oh, now you are interested.
The man stands up straight with shock and quickly retreats.
La Estrella: Adios.
