OFF-CAMERA
Samantha Tolson held the hand of her girlfriend, Katie Anderson, as they walked along the edge of the pool between the Washington Monument and Lincoln’s, heading toward the seated statue of the former president from Illinois. Both were smiling, and despite the cold weather, the sun shone brightly on this mid-Saturday afternoon, reflecting off the snow, as well as the ice forming in the pool.
“Thanks for coming along with me Sam...I love doing things like this with you.”
Samantha smiled as brightly as the reflected sunshine. “And I with you my love. It’s nice to have someone to do things like this with. Not many people I know would actually enjoy a trip like this, or sights like these.”
“Well, I have the best sight in all of DC right here with me.”
That made Samantha blush a crimson red. “I don’t know about all that. I mean, that Washington Monument is certainly pretty, and the tour of the Capitol Building earlier was, in a word, fascinating.”
Katie blushed as well. “Well, I am a political junkie. Dad used to take me to the state house as kids. I even got to meet Governor Purdue once.”
“I got to meet two governors, which is fairly easy living in the state capital...both Matt Blunt and jay Nixon visited our school while I was there and they were in office. I like politics as well. While most find them tedious and boring, I think it’s interesting to see how people feel about our country and the state, and how they want to see it run.”
“Me too. I was so nervous the day I met Purdue….” Katie giggles slightly, still holding Samantha’s hand.
Samantha turned and looked at Katie. “That’s a bit hard to imagine, you nervous around someone like that.”
“Oh, I was totally nervous! It was like meeting a big movie or rock star or something for a school girl like me.”
Samantha grinned. “Somehow I believe that, even if I didn’t see it.”
Katie stopped and turned Samantha back to her, wrapping her arms around Samantha’s waist. “You know...this match tomorrow night will be hard for me to watch, right?”
Samantha sighed heavily, knowing it would, indeed, take an emotional toll. “I know. And I don’t necessarily want to hurt Ashley, but she did ask for this.”
Katie nods a little. “I know. But I know that despite what she says, if she can end you, she will. I know her well enough to know that she can put on the old brave face as much as she wants, but inside she blames you for her and I splitting up.”
Samantha puts her arms around Katie’s neck, looking into her eyes. “She can try to end me, just as so many others have….and they’ve all walked away from the ring as fools, unable to back up their desire with action. Ashley Williams, baby, is just the next one in line to be proven wrong.”
Katie smiled at her girlfriend slowly. “You do know I want you to win, right?”
Samantha chuckled softly, then grinned again. “I should certainly hope so. After all, you’re going to be with me for a long, long time, and I’d hate for you to have to try and live down cheering for your ex against the woman you’re spending the rest of your life with.”
Katie kissed Samantha quickly. “And I won’t have to. Because I know how fiercely you’ll fight to win that match.”
Samantha kissed Katie back, slowly and lovingly. “I would fight the whole of earth itself for you.”
Katie grinned. “I know...just one more reason why I love you so much.”
“And I love you too, Katie. With all my heart.”
The pair kissed again, slowly and lovingly again before Katie spoke. “Let’s go. I wanna see the Lincoln Memorial, then we need to find something to eat before we go back to the hotel.”
Samantha took Katie’s hand again, beaming from ear to ear. “Sounds like a plan. Let’s go.”
The two walked further along the pool toward the presidential memorial, still hand in hand, looking like a couple that would, indeed, last forever.
ON-CAMERA
"I told you, Ashley, that I would educate you on something this week, and, well, now's the time."
"So, let me start by saying this..."
"...Katie was never yours to begin with. She was always, and now will forever, be mine."
Samantha Tolson sits in one of the two captain's style chairs on her private plane, a bottle of Mountain Dew in the cupholder. She's in her usual travel ensemble...which means she's wearing a #TeamSuplex shirt, a pair of Nike basketball shorts, and a pair or Reebok sneakers. The look on her face is somewhat blank, almost cold and dark, not a look she usually would have.
"Now, I'm going to circle all this back to this little fight we're having tomorrow night, so bear with me, but there are some things you really, really need to know. Some things that I've never told anyone yet, maybe even things that will allow you to let go of all the anger you have toward me."
"You have been blasting it all over Twitter, as often as your little black heart desires, that Katie and I were sleeping together the whole time the two of you were engaged. That, my dear, is a fallacy. Yes, it did happen....one time. But to continue this whole line of the two of us acting like overly-passioned rabbits while Katie was engaged to you? That's nothing more than continuing to tell a lie. Continuing to do nothing more than make a vain attempt to drag my name through the mud, sully my reputation in the ring."
"Now, I'll grant you that outside the ring....maybe I'm not the best person. Yet. I'm working on that, and I will eventually be as good a person outside of it as I am a fighter inside. That day's not here yet, but it is coming, I assure you."
"But back to the point...you're only feeding into the misconceptions and mistaken notions that most everyone else seems to have about Katie and me."
"But you're going to ask yourself, right now, why was one time enough for me to turn her attentions my way?"
"Like I said, Ashley....she was never, ever yours. Not fully. Not completely."
"Oh, I'm sure the two of you had a lot of fun...and you can take that any way you want it...hell, I was even a part of that fun one night, one I'm sure you remember. But what Katie and I have is far, far deeper than simple physicality. What we have is real, it is pure, and it is true. It is love, Ashley, which is something you never offered her."
"Yes, you offered her your bed, and you offered her your body, but you never once completely gave her your heart. There is no way you could have. You oggled every single picture of an attractive man or woman posted to Twitter. You drooled over some of the ones I myself posted. You even threw yourself, digitally, at some of them….myself included.”
“Yet, you claim that you’re hurting because Katie left you for me.”
“I have to ask you, Ashley, how is this even possible, when you never truly loved her the way she deserves to be loved?”
“All the while, Ashley, Katie was talking to me, telling me how much she was hurting because of it all. Telling me that even after the two of you broke up briefly, her continued pain at your flagrant actions toward others, tongue dragging the whole while, as the woman you had sworn to give your life to was in serious pain.”
“It was then, Ashley...when she trusted me to tell things she told no one else, to tell me of the heartache she felt when she let no one else know...that’s when I knew I loved her, and she loved me.”
“But make no mistake, Ashley. I did not, under any circumstances, take Katie from you. Yes, we shared a night of passion together in my home, one where both of us knew better but gave in anyway. I admit to that. And in that moment, in those circumstances, I was wrong. I also admit that.”
“But I didn’t take her from you, you threw her away.”
Samantha picks up her bottle of Dew, and takes a long, slow drink before putting it back in the cup holder.
“Now, I promised you I would tie this all into our match, and so I shall.”
“See, Ashley, you want everyone to believe that you’re letting loose this monster, this wicked, evil being locked up inside you that hasn’t seen the light of day for a long time.”
“Thing of it is, if that person was inside you, she would have appeared already. That monster would have come to the ring some night, blindsided me, and taken her pound of flesh from me for what she believes has happened. For the pain she believes I’ve caused her.”
“But you didn’t. Never showed your face at ringside. In LAW, or anywhere else, and God knows, Ashley, you’ve had plenty of opportunities. It’s no big secret that I work, and I work a lot for a lot of places. You could have shown up in any crowd, at any arena, and taken the piss out of me if you’d have wanted.”
“Yet, you haven’t.”
“That’s why you lost Katie, and that’s why you’ll lose this match. You’ve made a ton of promises, but when it comes to fulfillment, Ashley, you never, ever deliver.”
“You say you have passion, but don’t display it. You say you have love for this sport, but at the end of the day you fall short.”
“So, why does losing Katie resemble this match? Aside from losing, that is?”
“Because when you had the chance to show the world what you’re made of, when you were given a chance to write a great love story with someone who wanted to write it along with you, you threw away the pen and torched the paper....and tomorrow night, you want to write a great match with me, a professional match, when there’s no writing utensils and no paper.”
“Just you, me, and falls counting anywhere inside the arena.”
“If you think for a hot second I won’t take advantage of that, Ashley, you’re dead fucking wrong. I made a promise to Katie that I wouldn’t intentionally hurt you, and I’ll honor that promise....”
“...but I never promised her I wouldn’t leave you in a bloody heap. I never promised I wouldn’t batter you and bruise you, use whatever’s not nailed down to put you down.”
“You’re out of your depth Ashley. And just like your tag partner will be soon as well, you’re about to find out one thing about me, one thing that’s always been true.”
Samantha looks into the camera with cold, hard eyes, her face a snarl.
“That the monster isn’t you. It’s me, at least inside the ring. And unlike you, this monster never tires, never quits, never stops, and will settle for nothing less than your shoulders against the mat or the floor for three seconds.”
“I’m going to beat you Ashley. And the fans, they're going to get their money's worth from this match alone, that I promise.”
“But at least when I do....you can finally say, with certainty, that I did indeed steal something from you.”
“You can say I stole a win, because tomorrow night, victory will be mine.”
“Release The Panic, Ashley Williams. Come and find out that I’m indeed the most hardcore woman in LAW.”
Samantha retains her cold stare as the camera shot fades away.
